About the job Assistant Port Captain
We are looking for an Assistant Port Captain to support the marine and HSSE operations of a growing Singapore-based ship management company. This role is ideal for a seafarer transitioning ashore or someone early in their shore-based maritime career, particularly with sailing experience on LPG or gas carriers.
You will be part of a dedicated ship management team, working alongside Port Captains, HSSE personnel, and technical staff to ensure safe, compliant, and efficient vessel operations. The role involves frequent ship visits, active participation in inspections, audits, crew engagement, and HSSE initiatives.
The ideal candidate would have a strong understanding of navigational and cargo operations, and a keen interest in developing their career in marine assurance, safety, and operational compliance within a shore-based setting.
Key Responsibilities:
- Liaise with Flag/Port States, Oil Majors, Classification Societies, Ship Agents, Owners, P&I and H&M Insurers.
- Plan and conduct at least two ship visits per week or at necessary intervals to manage effectively.
- Participate in onboard ship meetings and drills at least once every 12 months per vessel.
- Attend and support QMBS, ISM/ISPS audits, and SIRE inspections.
- Oversee and follow up on audit non-conformances and observations.
- Monitor fleet navigational performance and propose corrective actions as needed.
- Ensure updates to charts, publications, and notices; verify with ship Masters.
- Support onboard incident investigations and reporting.
- Conduct Master performance evaluations at least every 6 months.
- Conduct Master navigation audits every 12 months.
- Interview deck officers for hiring, promotion, disciplinary matters, and rejoining briefings.
- Maintain an updated list of maritime regulatory publications and ensure fleet access.
- Provide feedback and recommendations in company shipboard visit meetings.
- Conduct random seafarer Drug & Alcohol tests (at least once every 12 months).
- Support other shipping department functions as required.
- Uphold a responsible and collaborative attitude aligned with company mission and values.
- Undertake any additional tasks assigned by the Head of HSSE
- Recognized degree in Maritime Studies or equivalent qualification.
- Minimum 2 years of shore-based ship management experience preferred.
- Class 2 Deck Officer CoC (Chief Officer) or equivalent.
- Strong technical knowledge of ship operations.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite.
