Role Overview

We are seeking a technically strong and product-minded Backend Engineer to build and maintain reliable backend systems for an AI-powered IoT product.

The selected candidate will work across backend services, APIs, databases, background jobs, authentication, device-data flows, AI workflows, and service integrations while collaborating closely with data science, firmware, IoT, and frontend engineering teams.

Key Responsibilities

• Build and maintain backend services for a production AI and IoT-enabled product.
• Develop APIs using Python, Django 5, and Django REST Framework.
• Work with ORM models, database migrations, serializers, permissions, and API design.
• Design backend services that connect product features, device data, AI workflows, and customer-facing applications.
• Integrate backend systems with authentication services, REST APIs, and service-to-service communication.
• Work with Firebase Auth/Admin, gRPC, protobuf, and related integration technologies when required.
• Build and maintain asynchronous workflows, background jobs, and queue-based processing.
• Work with Redis and Dramatiq for background processing and event-driven workflows.
• Collaborate with data science engineers to support AI-driven insights, analytics workflows, model outputs, and data pipelines.
• Collaborate with firmware and IoT engineers to connect device behaviour, hardware signals, telemetry, and backend services.
• Debug issues across APIs, databases, workers, queues, authentication flows, integrations, and device-data flows.
• Improve backend reliability, observability, performance, and maintainability.
• Participate in code reviews and contribute to engineering standards across the team.
• Provide technical input on feature design, feasibility, system behaviour, and customer experience.
• Contribute to AI-assisted and agentic development workflows to improve engineering speed and quality.
• Use AI tools responsibly to support debugging, documentation, code quality, testing, and technical problem-solving.
• Maintain clean, scalable, and well-documented backend code.
• Work closely with cross-functional engineering teams to understand the full product and support broader technical ownership.
• Perform any other backend engineering, integration, or product-development duties assigned by management.

Candidate Profile

• Strong backend engineering experience with hands-on production development exposure.
• Strong knowledge of Python, Django, and Django REST Framework.
• Experience designing and developing APIs, backend services, and service logic.
• Good understanding of PostgreSQL, database modelling, queries, and migrations.
• Experience working with Redis, background jobs, queues, or asynchronous processing.
• Experience with authentication flows and third-party service integrations.
• Familiarity with Dockerized services and production debugging.
• Ability to debug complex issues across APIs, databases, workers, integrations, and service-to-service communication.
• Strong understanding of clean code, maintainability, performance, and backend reliability.
• Experience working with data science, AI, IoT, firmware, or device-data teams will be an advantage.
• Ability to use AI tools effectively while applying strong engineering judgment.
• Comfortable working with ambiguity and asking the right technical questions.
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
• Good communication and collaboration skills.
• Ability to work closely with backend, frontend, firmware, IoT, and data science teams.
• Product-minded, detail-oriented, and interested in understanding the full customer journey.
• Proactive, accountable, and willing to grow into broader technical ownership.

Preferred Experience

• Experience working on IoT, video, telemetry, ML/AI, or real-time data products.
• Experience collaborating with firmware or embedded engineering teams.
• Experience with AI coding agents, AI-assisted testing, AI-based code reviews, or internal developer tools.
• Full-stack capability or interest will be an advantage.
• Experience with Rust services, especially Tokio, Axum, Reqwest, and Serde, will be an advantage.
• Experience in a startup or product-led engineering environment will be preferred.
