About the job Consultant of Radiotherapy
The Consultant of Radiotherapy Unit (or Radiation Oncologist) is mainly involved in the treatment of the cancer patients, in particular involving the use of ionizing radiation alone, or combined with other modalities. They also have expertise in the treatment of non- cancerous conditions using radiation therapy. They are responsible for monitoring the patient and organising imaging and other tests, in order to create and action a management plan for a patient.
The Consultant works also closely with other medical specialists, especially surgeons, oncologists and palliative care physicians, as part of a team caring for patients with cancer. As radiation oncologists, they also work closely with radiation oncology medical physicists and radiation therapists to plan and deliver radiation therapy.
- A MBChB. or its equivalent from a recognized University
- A M.Sc. degree or Postgraduate diploma in Radiation Oncology or Radiotherapy of specialized path (following 4 years of a residency program in radiotherapy) followed by American Board of Certification in Radiation Oncology (ABPS) or UK radiotherapy board.
- Must be registered (or meet the requirements for registration, if currently working abroad) to the Ugandan Medical and Dental Practitioners Council
- Shall be practicing Radiotherapy
- Minimum of nine (9) years of work experience of which at least four (4) years practicing in IMRT technique and stereotactic procedures in addition to Brachytherapy treatment including prostate & cervical cancers.
