Location: Ghent, Belgium

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced UX Designer / Front-End Developer to support the continued development of multiple web platforms and applications built on Django and Wagtail.

While the assignment is classified under a UX Designer profile, the primary focus is on front-end implementation. You will transform Figma designs into high-quality, maintainable, accessible, and responsive front-end solutions using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript within a server-rendered environment.

This role goes beyond traditional front-end implementation. We are looking for someone who can contribute to scalable component architecture, design systems, reusable patterns, and long-term maintainability while ensuring effective knowledge transfer to internal teams.

Key Responsibilities

Front-End Development

  • Translate Figma designs into semantic, accessible, and responsive HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • Develop reusable templates, components, and front-end patterns.
  • Implement interactive elements within Django and Wagtail applications.
  • Ensure browser compatibility, performance optimization, and maintainability.
  • Build scalable front-end architectures suitable for large content-driven websites and applications.

Design System & Component Development

  • Contribute to the technical implementation and evolution of design systems.
  • Develop and maintain component libraries and pattern libraries.
  • Establish reusable styling guidelines and front-end development standards.
  • Ensure consistency across applications and websites.

UX & Technical Collaboration

  • Collaborate closely with UX/UI designers, analysts, back-end developers, and stakeholders.
  • Review designs critically and provide feedback on feasibility, scalability, consistency, and maintainability.
  • Support implementation decisions that align with existing systems and future growth.

Documentation & Knowledge Transfer

  • Document implementation decisions, component structures, and development guidelines.
  • Share knowledge with internal teams and ensure maintainability after project completion.
  • Support and mentor colleagues on front-end best practices, design systems, and component-based development approaches.

Required Qualifications

Experience

  • Minimum 8 years of experience as a UX Designer and/or Front-End Specialist.
  • Proven experience working independently on development projects.
  • Strong experience with design tools such as:

    • Figma
    • Adobe Creative Suite
    • Sketch
    • InVision
  • Minimum 5 years of experience with component-based front-end development using:

    • HTML
    • CSS
    • JavaScript
  • Minimum 5 years of experience developing and maintaining:

    • Design Systems
    • Component Libraries
    • Pattern Libraries
  • Minimum 5 years of experience with:

    • Figma hand-off processes
    • Design tokens
    • Component variants and states
    • Typography and spacing systems
  • Minimum 5 years of experience building reusable front-end patterns and developer documentation.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience designing maintainable CSS architectures for large-scale websites and applications.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience with semantic HTML and structured content-driven templates.
  • Demonstrated experience with responsive design and cross-device implementation.
  • Experience providing knowledge transfer and documentation to internal teams.

Language Requirements

  • Native-level Dutch proficiency (CEFR C2).
  • Professional English proficiency (minimum CEFR C1).
  • Ability to read, write, and explain technical documentation in both languages.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience within academic, public sector, or government environments.
  • Experience working in complex organizations with more than 20,000 users.
  • Experience using:

    • Git, Subversion, or other version control systems
    • Testing and code profiling tools
    • Jira or similar issue management platforms
  • Experience implementing designs directly in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • Experience with content design for content-driven websites and applications.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience with:

    • Django Templates
    • Wagtail Templates
    • Similar server-side templating frameworks

Nice to Have

  • Minimum 5 years of experience with htmx or similar technologies for interactive server-rendered applications.
  • Experience with progressive enhancement strategies.
  • Experience integrating JavaScript into server-rendered environments.
  • Experience coaching or mentoring developers on component-based front-end development and design systems.
