Help Residents Overcome Barriers and Move Towards Employment

We're recruiting three proactive and compassionate Health and Work Coaches to support Lewisham Council, helping residents address barriers to employment, build confidence, and take practical steps towards suitable and sustainable work.

This role combines individual coaching, employment support, stakeholder engagement, and community-based working. You'll help residents understand their strengths, identify their goals, and access support that reflects their individual circumstances, including health-related challenges that may affect their ability to find or remain in work.

You'll work with residents, Council colleagues, healthcare professionals, community organisations, and employment support partners to provide a coordinated, person-centred service.

About the Role

As a Health and Work Coach, you'll support residents through tailored one-to-one guidance, practical action planning, and regular progress reviews.

You'll manage a caseload, build positive working relationships, and help individuals navigate relevant employment, health, wellbeing, and community services. The role involves working across office and community settings, including the Leemore Centre and local GP practices.

What you'll be doing:

  • Providing personalised coaching and employment support, helping residents identify their strengths, aspirations, and barriers to work.
  • Developing individual action plans, agreeing realistic goals and reviewing progress with residents throughout their support.
  • Helping residents improve their employability, including support with job searches, applications, CV preparation, and interview confidence.
  • Recognising health-related and wider barriers to employment, connecting residents with appropriate specialist services while maintaining professional boundaries.
  • Managing an active caseload, organising appointments, maintaining engagement, and adapting support to individual needs.
  • Working collaboratively with Council teams, healthcare professionals, community organisations, and employment services to coordinate support and appropriate referrals.
  • Maintaining accurate and confidential records, documenting assessments, agreed actions, referrals, progress, and outcomes.
  • Promoting safe and inclusive working practices, following relevant safeguarding, confidentiality, and health and safety procedures, and escalating concerns appropriately.

Requirements

We're looking for empathetic, organised, and motivated individuals with strong communication skills and experience supporting people to achieve personal or employment-related goals.

You'll be comfortable working independently, managing competing priorities, and building trust with residents who may need additional support to engage with services or move towards work.

You'll ideally have:

  • Experience in employment support, coaching, careers guidance, community services, health and wellbeing support, or a related field.
  • Experience supporting people facing barriers to employment, including health-related, confidence, skills, or personal challenges.
  • Strong one-to-one coaching and engagement skills, with the ability to listen, motivate, and agree achievable next steps.
  • Experience managing a caseload and maintaining accurate records, including action plans, progress updates, and referrals.
  • The ability to work effectively with different organisations, including public-sector services, healthcare teams, and community partners.
  • An understanding of safeguarding, confidentiality, equality, and professional boundaries, together with a respectful and non-judgemental approach.

Applicants should have the right to work in the UK, be able to attend the required borough, office, and community locations, and be available for the stated assignment period. Relevant references and pre-employment checks will be required.

Why Apply

This is an opportunity to undertake meaningful, resident-focused work, helping people build confidence, access appropriate support, and progress towards employment.

The role offers variety through a combination of individual coaching, partnership working, and community engagement, with opportunities to work alongside Council services, healthcare professionals, and local organisations.
