Support Effective Financial Management and the Delivery of Council Services
We're recruiting an experienced and detail-focused Senior Finance Officer (PO1) to join Enfield Council on a permanent basis, providing technical financial support and helping services maintain accurate, reliable financial information.
This role combines financial reporting, budget monitoring, account reconciliation, and support for financial planning. You'll help colleagues understand their financial position, investigate discrepancies, and maintain effective financial controls.
You'll work closely with finance colleagues, budget holders, and service managers, providing clear information and practical support to help the Council manage its resources effectively.
About the Role
As a Senior Finance Officer, you'll support the preparation, monitoring, and reporting of financial information, ensuring records are accurate and tasks are completed within agreed deadlines.
You'll bring a methodical approach to financial processes, investigate issues, and communicate findings clearly. The role requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to balance routine responsibilities with more complex enquiries and reporting requirements.
What you'll be doing:
- Supporting budget preparation, monitoring, and forecasting, working with budget holders to review income, expenditure, and expected financial movements.
- Preparing financial reports and analysis, explaining variances and highlighting issues that require further investigation or action.
- Completing account reconciliations, investigating discrepancies and ensuring balances are supported by appropriate records.
- Maintaining accurate financial information, reviewing transactions, checking coding, and processing adjustments within agreed responsibilities.
- Supporting month-end and year-end processes, preparing schedules, journals, and supporting documentation to meet reporting deadlines.
- Providing financial guidance to colleagues and service managers, responding to enquiries and explaining processes clearly.
- Supporting financial controls and audit activity, maintaining clear records and helping provide evidence and explanations when required.
- Identifying opportunities to improve financial processes, helping reduce errors, resolve recurring issues, and improve the quality of reporting.
- Managing competing priorities, ensuring financial tasks, enquiries, and reporting requirements are progressed effectively.
Requirements
We're looking for an organised, analytical, and proactive finance professional with experience providing technical financial support in a busy organisation.
You'll be confident working with financial information, identifying inconsistencies, and explaining findings to colleagues with different levels of financial knowledge. A collaborative approach and a commitment to accuracy will be important.
You'll ideally have:
- Experience in a finance, accounting, or financial support role, with responsibility for maintaining and analysing financial information.
- Experience supporting budget monitoring and financial reporting, including identifying and explaining variances.
- Strong reconciliation skills, with the ability to investigate discrepancies and resolve financial queries.
- An understanding of accounting principles and financial controls, including the importance of accurate records and clear supporting documentation.
- Experience using financial systems and spreadsheets, including analysing data and preparing reports.
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to work effectively with finance colleagues, budget holders, and service teams.
- Good organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing deadlines and work independently within agreed procedures.
- A relevant finance or accounting qualification, or equivalent practical experience.
Experience working within a local authority or another public-sector organisation would be beneficial.
Applicants should have the right to work in the UK and be prepared to complete the relevant references and pre-employment checks required for the appointment.
