About the Job – Second Deckhand / Barge Operations
The Second Deckhand will support the safe and efficient operation of seasonal barge transportation activities in the Yukon. This role involves assisting with cargo handling, mooring operations, deck maintenance, and general vessel support while working in remote river environments.
The successful candidate will work closely with the captain and deck crew to ensure daily operations are carried out safely, efficiently, and in accordance with operational procedures.
This is a seasonal, site-based role for the 2026 navigation season.
Responsibilities
Deck & Vessel Operations
- Assist with barge loading, unloading, and cargo securement activities
- Handle mooring lines, rigging, and towing equipment during docking and transit operations
- Support safe vessel navigation and daily deck operations under the direction of the captain
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of deck spaces, equipment, and work areas
- Conduct routine inspections and basic maintenance of deck equipment and tools
- Follow all marine safety procedures, operational protocols, and environmental requirements
Site & Crew Support
- Work closely with the captain and crew to support daily operational requirements
- Assist with fuel transfers, material handling, and general labor tasks as required
- Participate in safety meetings, emergency drills, and operational planning activities
- Support mobilization and demobilization at seasonal start-up and shutdown
- Operate safely and effectively in remote and changing weather conditions
Package Details
Compensation
- Compensation will be based on qualifications and experience
- Compensation is based on actual hours worked
Work Schedule
This is a seasonal contract role based in the Yukon operating region from June 1, 2026, to October 1, 2026. Work schedules will vary depending on operational requirements. Travel, accommodations, and meals may be provided during active operations.
Qualifications / Experience / Education
- Previous marine, barge, transportation, construction, or heavy labor experience preferred
- Ability to work long hours outdoors in varying weather and river conditions
- Physically fit and capable of lifting and handling heavy materials and equipment
- Valid driver’s license preferred
- Marine certifications or safety training considered an asset
- Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively in a small crew environment
- Experience working in remote locations considered an asset
