Role Overview

The Intermediate Accountant is responsible for preparing tax compliance work, financial statements, and management accounts for Australian clients, primarily sole trader doctors, while supporting senior accountants with entity taxation and client advisory services.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Prepare income tax returns for sole trader doctors.
  • Prepare and review quarterly Business Activity Statements (BAS).
  • Prepare tax returns, including GST and Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT).
  • Prepare financial statements and supporting workpapers in accordance with Australian accounting standards.
  • Assist with the preparation of trust, company, and partnership tax returns.
  • Prepare management accounts and annual financial statements.
  • Identify tax compliance issues and escalate recommendations to Managers or Directors.
  • Liaise directly with clients to respond to queries and provide accounting information.
  • Manage daily client correspondence and workflow to ensure timely completion of work.
  • Ensure all tax compliance work is completed accurately and within required deadlines.
  • Apply an intermediate understanding of Australian tax legislation and related tax concepts.
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Support team members in meeting client deadlines and service requirements.
  • Assist with mentoring and training junior accountants on client engagements.
  • Support Directors with special projects and business improvement initiatives.
  • Assist in maintaining existing client relationships and supporting business development activities.

Required Experience

  • 1–2 years of experience in an accounting role within a public practice or business services environment.
  • Experience preparing Australian individual tax returns and BAS.
  • Experience preparing financial statements and working papers.
  • Experience working within a collaborative accounting team.
  • Experience working towards KPIs, budgets, and client deadlines.
  • Experience mentoring or assisting junior accountants is advantageous.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or a related field.
  • Commenced, or willing to commence, the Chartered Accountant (CA) program.
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles and Australian taxation fundamentals.

Candidate Must Have

  • Experience preparing Australian individual tax returns and BAS.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines and priorities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.

Experience Advantage

  • Experience preparing trust, partnership, and company tax returns.
  • Experience within an Australian public practice accounting firm.

  • Progress toward CA qualification.
