Senior CAD Draftsperson / Structural Engineer (Onsite, Dayshift)

Roles and Responsibilities

• Produce and review structural steel shop drawings and erection drawings to fabrication-ready standards.
• Develop accurate 3D models for coordination, fabrication, and erection sequencing.
• Prepare General Arrangement (GA) drawings, connection details, and fabrication/erection sequences.
• Ensure drawings align with engineering calculations, project specifications, and Australian Standards.
• Interpret structural engineering calculations and design intent.
• Support connection design development, load path coordination, and member sizing alignment.
• Identify and resolve clashes, constructability risks, and detailing issues.
• Provide technical input to design development and value engineering initiatives.
• Liaise with structural engineers, fabrication workshops, project managers, and site teams.
• Respond to RFIs, site queries, and manage drawing revisions.
• Support fabrication and installation issue resolution.
• Maintain drawing registers and document control systems.

Required Experience

• Minimum of 5 years experience in structural steel drafting and detailing.
• Proven experience producing fabrication-ready shop drawings.
• Hands-on experience coordinating with engineers, fabricators, and site teams.
• Minimum Qualifications
• Diploma or Advanced Diploma in Engineering Drafting OR
• Bachelors degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.

A Successful Candidate Must Have

• Strong understanding of structural steel systems, connection detailing, and fabrication processes.
• Working knowledge of AS 4100 – Steel Structures and relevant Australian Standards.
• High attention to detail with strong coordination and documentation skills.
• Ability to work autonomously with minimal supervision.

Proficient With

• Tekla Structures (preferred).
• Advance Steel or AutoCAD with a strong structural steel detailing background.
• 3D modeling and drafting tools for fabrication and erection coordination.

Experience Advantage

• Background working within a steel fabrication environment.
• Experience on industrial, mining, infrastructure, modular, or residential steel projects.
• Ability to mentor junior draftspeople.
• Exposure to basic structural calculations and design tools.
• Engineering registration or progress toward chartership (if engineer-qualified).
