About the job Director of Operations

Director of Operations – Mechanical Systems Manufacturing

(General Manager-Level Authority)
Durham Region, Ontario

We are currently recruiting on behalf of a well-established, vertically integrated mechanical systems manufacturing company based in the Durham Region.

This organization operates a 60,000 sq. ft. production facility, in-house engineering, and dedicated field installation teams — delivering custom-built mechanical systems across commercial, residential, and institutional environments.

As the business continues to grow, they are seeking a senior operational leader to bring structure, alignment, and performance discipline across the organization.

The Role

This is a Director of Operations position with General Manager-level authority across operations.

The immediate mandate is execution.

This role is focused on strengthening alignment between manufacturing, engineering, and field installation — ensuring production schedules, installation timelines, and operational KPIs are synchronized and optimized.

The Director of Operations will report directly to ownership and assume full day-to-day responsibility for operational performance.

What You'll Be Responsible For

Operational Leadership

  • Oversee manufacturing operations within a 60K sq. ft. facility
  • Align production schedules with field installation timelines
  • Ensure engineering-to-production handoffs are seamless
  • Improve coordination between shop, engineering, and field teams

Performance & Accountability

  • Develop and manage operational KPIs
  • Implement reporting dashboards and visibility tools
  • Hold department leaders accountable to targets
  • Improve scheduling discipline and delivery performance

Financial & Margin Oversight

  • Monitor operational budgets and cost controls
  • Protect and improve gross margins through efficiency gains
  • Identify productivity improvements and waste reduction opportunities

Process & Systems Improvement

  • Identify bottlenecks and implement corrective actions
  • Standardize workflows across departments
  • Reduce rework, delays, and operational inefficiencies

Leadership & Team Development

  • Lead supervisors and department heads
  • Strengthen operational bench strength
  • Build accountability and performance culture

The Profile

This is not a stepping-stone role.

We are seeking a seasoned operational leader who has already led multi-department environments and understands both production and field coordination.

The ideal candidate brings:

  • 10+ years of progressive operational leadership experience
  • Background in mechanical systems manufacturing, industrial fabrication, or integrated production + installation environments
  • Experience overseeing multiple operational departments
  • Strong understanding of scheduling, workflow integration, and KPI management
  • Budget oversight and cost-control experience
  • Comfort reporting directly to ownership
  • Strong leadership presence across shop-floor and executive discussions

Technical fluency in mechanical systems environments is important. AutoCAD familiarity is considered an asset.

The Bigger Picture

While the immediate focus is operational execution, this role carries broad authority across the organization and is structured to evolve over time to include expanded leadership visibility across the business.

The right individual will have a direct line of sight into financial performance, cross-department strategy, and long-term operational growth.

Compensation

Competitive base salary expected in the range of $115,000 – $125,000 commensurate with experience.

Performance-based incentives tied to operational efficiency, margin improvement, and delivery metrics.
