Introduction

Purpose of the Role

The Quantity Surveyor (QS) is responsible for managing all commercial, cost, and procurement functions on Metal Inc projects. Operating as the critical link between the office and site, the QS ensures that all materials and subcontract services are sourced and procured cost-effectively, that accurate quantity take-offs and variation documentation support financial recovery, and that procurement administration is executed with precision.

This is a hybrid, QS-first role for a candidate who understands that accurate procurement begins with a thorough understanding of project requirements.

Duties & Responsibilities

2. Key Responsibilities

2.1 Quantity Surveying & Cost Management

  • Perform quantity take-offs for balustrades, sundry metalwork, and structural steel projects to support bid preparation
  • Prepare and manage variation and additional works documentation to ensure full financial recovery on all projects
  • Conduct monthly progress valuations and prepare payment claims for submission to clients and main contractors
  • Assist in the preparation of project budgets, cost plans, and cash flow forecasts
  • Monitor and report on project costs against approved budgets; flag variances to the Managing Director timeously
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of material and labour pricing to support accurate estimating

2.2 Procurement

  • Manage the full procurement lifecycle — from identifying material requirements through to purchase order issuance and delivery confirmation
  • Source and negotiate pricing for steel, hardware, consumables, and subcontract services to achieve cost-effective procurement
  • Maintain an approved supplier database and evaluate supplier performance on an ongoing basis
  • Issue and manage Requests for Quotation (RFQs), evaluate responses, and make award recommendations
  • Ensure all procurement aligns with project specifications, drawings, and cutting lists issued by the draughting team
  • Coordinate with stores to track inventory levels and initiate replenishment in advance of project requirements

2.3 Contract & Document Administration

  • Generate, manage, and file Quotes, Purchase Orders (POs), Delivery Notes, and Invoices accurately and timeously
  • Maintain a complete and organised project register including all commercial correspondence, variation orders, and claims
  • Support the preparation and submission of subcontract claims and back-charges where applicable
  • Assist with JBCC and NEC contract administration as required on relevant projects

2.4 Site & Project Coordination

  • Conduct site visits for measurement, verification of quantities, and assessment of variations
  • Liaise with project managers, site supervisors, and installation teams to align procurement with project schedules
  • Attend project meetings and contribute to programme reviews and cost reporting
  • Identify procurement risks and supply chain constraints early and escalate accordingly

Desired Experience & Qualification

3. Minimum Requirements

Qualifications

  • BTech QS, BSc QS, or equivalent qualification (completed or in progress)
  • Professional registration with ASAQS or SACQSP is advantageous

Experience

  • 1–3 years' hands-on QS experience within metal fabrication, steel construction, or the built environment
  • Proven experience in quantity take-offs, variation management, and payment claim preparation
  • Procurement or buying experience is a strong added benefit

Technical Skills

  • Proficiency in MS Excel — essential (advanced skills preferred)
  • Experience with QS or project management software (e.g. Wrike, CCS Candy, or similar) is advantageous
  • Ability to read and interpret technical engineering drawings, fabrication drawings, and specifications
  • Strong numerical ability and attention to detail in all cost and measurement work

Mobility

  • Valid driver's licence
  • Willingness and ability to travel to project sites for measurements, inspections, and client meetings
