About the role

As Advanced Research Assistant, you will be responsible for:
Technical leadership

  • Planning, organising and scheduling your workload in line with team priorities. Provide guidance and support to less experienced team members as required to ensure quality and timeliness are maintained across the operation.
  • Perform sample QC, extractions, library preparation and sequencing as well as routine laboratory processes including interpreting results to a pass/fail level. Recognise and flag anomalies as they arise to senior staff and associated stakeholders troubleshooting and identifying solutions on each occasion.
  • Maintain equipment to ensure it is fit for purpose and operating within set validation criteria. Ensure service level agreements are adhered to and proactively raise all operating issues.
  • Contribute to the housekeeping tasks within the lab areas by following weekly/monthly cleaning and maintenance regimes; take responsibility for all tasks being completed on time.
  • Monitor lab resources; take responsibility for stock levels being maintained to prescribed levels and make recommendations to senior staff on consumable stock levels to support an efficiently run operation.
  • Working in collaboration with senior staff and the Team Leaders fostering a positive working environment. Respond positively to change and flex to meet the changing demands of the Institute
  • Solution-focused
  • Proactively contribute to process improvement within the team using prescribed methodologies. Champion the application of continuous improvement principles (5S, Kaizen etc.) within the lab and support the implementation of new techniques into the team portfolio in collaboration with the RD team.
  • Show compliance with quality policies, SOPs and HS procedures. Ensure all individuals in the lab adhere to existing risk assessments and SOPs at all times and update / prepare new documents when required.
  • Take responsibility for your training record and ensure it is up to date at all times. Train and coach new / less experienced members of staff providing technical, theoretical and practical information and work with senior staff to agree on any new training or scheduling of refresher training for yourself and others.
  • Review and update SOPs and Risk Assessments in accordance with current governance. Prepare and contribute to writing new documents when required.



About you

To excel in this role, you should have the following skills and experience:

  • BSc in a biological science or equivalent experience.
  • Excellent knowledge and practical experience in relevant techniques to the role.
  • Previous work experience as a technician/research assistant in a laboratory.
  • Ability to correctly interpret scientific data.
  • Excellent organisational and planning skills in managing competing priorities in a busy environment.
  • A high level of interpersonal and communication skills.
  • A team player attitude with strong professional ethos demonstrating an approachable attitude and willingness to share information
  • Proven track record of consistent delivery in terms of volume/speed/quality.
  • Computer literate: Microsoft Office programs including Word and Excel.
  • It is desirable but not essential for you to have experience in training and mentoring, LIMS and automation and high-throughput assays
