About the Opportunity
We are partnering with an established insurance company seeking an Assistant Controller to support the organization's financial operations and oversee key accounting functions. This role is ideal for someone with strong accounting experience, attention to detail, and the ability to work in a regulated environment such as insurance or financial services. The Assistant Controller will play a critical role in financial reporting, month-end close, regulatory compliance, and process improvement initiatives while supporting the Controller and executive team. Applicants must be residing in Hawaii at the time of application.


Key Responsibilities

  • Support and oversee daily accounting operations including general ledger, AR/AP, bank reconciliations, and journal entries

  • Lead month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting

  • Prepare and review financial statements in accordance with GAAP and insurance regulatory requirements

  • Assist with statutory filings and regulatory reporting for insurance compliance

  • Perform variance analysis, account reconciliations, and financial reviews

  • Work closely with auditors during annual audit and regulatory examinations

  • Help implement and maintain internal controls, accounting policies, and process improvements

  • Assist in budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning functions

  • Provide financial insights and support for management decision-making

  • Supervise and mentor accounting staff as needed


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required

  • 4-7+ years of progressive accounting experience; insurance or financial services industry experience strongly preferred
  • Strong working knowledge of GAAP; familiarity with statutory accounting principles is a plus
  • CPA or progress toward CPA is highly preferred

  • Experience with accounting systems and Excel (pivot tables, lookups, etc.)

  • Excellent analytical skills and strong attention to detail

  • Ability to work independently, manage deadlines, and support multiple priorities
  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across departments
