Transducer Design Engineer
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Transducer Design Engineer is responsible for the design, development and documentation of piezo-electric transducers and associated products. Work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team in a subsystem design and manufacturing environment to develop sonar transmitters and receivers, primarily for U.S. Navy applications. Develop new, or modify existing, transducers for use in space-, weight-, and/or power-limited subsystems. Perform lab and at-sea testing on SONAR subsystems as part of the design verification and qualification process. Prepare and present reports and briefings for internal and external audiences.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Design new piezo-electric transducers for Sonatech's underwater acoustics systems
- Design, evaluation and selection of piezo-ceramic components used for new and ongoing transducer/sensor design and production projects
- Provide transducer engineering expertise to support the manufacturing of piezo-electric products
- Test and evaluate new transducer designs using laboratory equipment for acoustic and vibration measurements
- Analysis of transducer output sensitivity/noise, resonances, etc., necessary to characterize a transducer
- Perform value analysis during the product design phase while optimizing product development costs
- Coordinate projects and tasks with other systems, mechanical, electrical, and manufacturing engineers to complete assignments and projects on schedule
- Research and investigate leading edge technologies for creating new products or processes
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor of Science or equivalent experience in Acoustics or Mechanical Engineering, or a relevant engineering or physical science discipline
- 2-5+ years minimum experience in piezo-electric transducer design in the medical, oil & gas, safety, automotive, aerospace, defense, or industrial markets
- Knowledge of piezo-ceramic types, modes, and properties useful for transducer design
- Working knowledge of mechanical design software such as Solid Works
- Working knowledge of numerical modeling techniques for electro-acoustic performance prediction as well as Finite Element Method (FEM) software such as Abaqus, ANSYS, ATILA or COMSOL for piezo devices
- Knowledge of how to design metal, plastic, and ceramic parts including material selection and fabrication techniques
- Knowledge of adhesives for different materials and their uses in transducer production
- General knowledge of electronics, soldering, connectors, etc.
- Good written and oral communication skills
- Good interpersonal skills and an ability to work with every level of the organization
- Must be a U.S. citizen with the ability to obtain a U.S. government security clearance
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master of Science or Ph.D. in Acoustics or Mechanical Engineering, or a relevant engineering or physical science discipline
