Your Role on the Team
We are looking for a Principal Data Engineer with a strong focus on SQL-based data modeling and analytical data transformation. This role is centered on designing and building business-ready datasets in a modern cloud data warehouse or lakehouse environment (Databricks, Snowflake, or similar).
Unlike traditional pipeline-focused data engineering roles, this position focuses on transforming raw data into structured analytical models, building reliable gold-layer datasets, and working closely with business stakeholders to define metrics and data structures used for analytics and reporting.
The ideal candidate is someone who writes complex SQL transformations, understands dimensional modeling, and can guide best practices in analytical data architecture across the team.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate directly with Data Architects and business partners to design, enhance, and evolve enterprise-wide data architecture and platform capabilities.
- Translate architectural strategies into technical execution, influencing implementation details, system design, and delivery approach across teams.
- Design, code, and optimize complex distributed data processing systems using technologies such as Spark, Databricks, and cloud-native data services.
- Design and build analytical data models used for reporting and business intelligence.
- Transform raw data into clean, business-ready tables using SQL transformations.
- Develop and maintain complex SQL queries using CTEs, window functions, and aggregations.
- Implement layered data architectures (bronze, silver, gold / medallion).
- Collaborate with business stakeholders to define metrics, KPIs, and data structures.
- Review and improve the quality of data models and SQL transformations across the team.
- Ensure data models are scalable, maintainable, and optimized for analytics workloads.
- Contribute to architectural decisions related to data warehousing and lakehouse design.
Must Have
- +8 years of data engineering experience.
- Expert SQL - This is a heavy SQL shop. Advanced query optimization,
complex joins, window functions, CTEs, performance tuning. - Strong experience with analytical data modeling.
- Excellent communication English skills - Clear, articulate communication with both technical and business stakeholders. Ability to explain technical concepts and ask clarifying questions.
- Cloud data platform experience - Extensive experience with distributed
data processing (Spark), cloud data platforms (Databricks, Synapse, or
AWS). - Data modeling - Strong ability to design dimensional models, data vault, canonical models across business domains.
- Production-grade data engineering - Understanding of building efficient, cost-effective queries and pipelines at scale.
- Medallion architecture - Deep understanding of bronze/silver/gold data transformation layers.
