Lyon County is seeking an Assistant County Attorney.
The employee in this position performs the duties of an attorney representing the State of Kansas in court matters. This is a full-time, FLSA-exempt position with benefits including heath/dental/vision insurance and paid time off. This position requires a license to practice law in the State of Kansas.
II. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
a. Represent the State of Kansas in court at all hearings regarding criminal cases.
b. Prosecute juvenile, traffic, misdemeanor, and felony cases as assigned.
c. Prosecute cases from determination of charges through the court process and appeal process when necessary.
d. Conduct negotiations with opposing counsel in accordance with office policy and procedures.
e. Advise law enforcement officers on criminal law and procedures.
f. Coordinate services of associated agencies involved in criminal cases for court procedures.
g. Research and analyze criminal law.
h. Attend and represent the County Attorneys Office at multidisciplinary team meetings as assigned by the County Attorney.
i. Assist in establishing office policies and procedures regarding disposition of cases, procedures and guidelines. Seek guidance of County Attorney or First Assistant County Attorney on decisions regarding policy and procedures.
III. MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:
a. Speak to public groups concerning the function of the County Attorneys office.
b. Attend both required and selected seminars or training programs applicable to the concerns of the office of the County Attorney.
IV. QUALIFICATIONS:
a. Education: Must have a law degree from an accredited school of law. Must be licensed to practice law in the State of Kansas.
b. Knowledge: Must have the ability to receive, interpret and follow verbal and written instructions. Required to read, write, and speak English fluently with the ability to speak a foreign language helpful. Must have knowledge of criminal law and criminal procedure as well as the statutory requirements regarding the office of County Attorney.
c. Experience: Prior prosecutorial experience is not necessary, but is helpful.
d. Problem Solving: Extensive problem solving exists in this position. Requires the ability to evaluate alternatives to resolve disputes. Must have the ability to interpret applicable statutes, regulations and policies and take appropriate action.
e. Decision Making: Moderate independent decision making exists in this position.
f. Supervisory: Adequate supervision is available to this position. Moderate indirect supervision occurs in working with the secretarial staff.
g. Financial/Budgetary: Spending authority is limited by department policy. May assist with budget preparation but control is limited.
h. Interpersonal: Frequent contact with department staff, law enforcement and the public.
i. Working Conditions: Very few adverse working conditions.
j. Must be willing to relocate to Lyon County, or to within one hours commute time to Emporia, KS.
k. Requires current Class C driver's license. Must possess all current legal or department certification or license.
l. Skills: Operate a computer, research software, and other office communication equipment common to this position.
m. Physical Requirements: Requires sufficient visual acuity to be able to read and write and operate equipment common to this position. Requires sufficient hearing level to be able to effectively communicate with people directly or by telephone. Frequently required to lift items weighing up to 25 pounds to a height of 72 inches.
