Assistant Financial Controller Role

On behalf of one of our clients, we are seeking an Assistant Financial Controller to support the Finance operations across the Gibraltar and Malta entities. This role is ideal for a technically strong accounting professional who enjoys working with detailed insurance data, complex reconciliations, and end‑to‑end financial processes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage the full technical accounting workflow for premiums, claims, commissions, and all gross insurance transactions.
  • Extract, validate, and process underwriting and claims bordereaux, ensuring complete and accurate data transfer into the finance systems.
  • Prepare monthly reinsurance workings (treaty, XOL, facultative) and post all associated journal entries.
  • Calculate unearned premiums, commission income, deferrals, and maintain strong control over related balance sheet accounts.
  • Perform detailed reconciliations for key accounts, including trade debtors and reinsurance partners, ensuring the integrity of the ledgers.
  • Lead the technical components of month‑end close and support the Financial Controller with accurate journal postings for management accounts.
  • Provide initial variance analysis against budget and prior year, and contribute validated data for forecasting and budgeting exercises.
  • Analyse broker performance against TOBA frameworks and support profit commission accruals.
  • Provide timely and accurate data for audits, actuarial reviews, and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with Underwriting, Claims, Actuarial and regional Finance teams to ensure alignment and consistency across all reporting outputs.
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen processes, controls, and efficiency within technical accounting and financial reporting.


The Ideal Candidate Profile:

  • Minimum part‑qualified ACCA (or equivalent).
  • 2–5 years experience in the insurance sector, ideally within FP&A (Financial Planning & Analysis), MI (Management Information), reporting, or financial analysis.
  • Strong analytical capability with confidence in interpreting financial and operational data.
  • Ability to work both independently and within cross‑functional teams.
  • Proactive approach to problem‑solving and able to identify issues before they escalate.
  • Comfortable with tight deadlines and shifting priorities.
  • Excellent communication skills, able to convey complex financial information clearly and effectively.
  • Naturally curious with a continuous improvement mindset.
  • Advanced Excel skills.

Travel: Occasional travel between Gibraltar and Malta may be required
