A well-established Virginia law firm is seeking an experienced Local Government / Municipal Attorney to join its public sector practice. The firm serves local governments, municipalities, and public entities throughout Virginia, providing practical and strategic legal solutions that help communities operate effectively and responsibly.

The Local Government / Municipal Law Attorney will provide legal counsel to cities, towns, and counties across Virginia. The attorney will advise on a wide range of issues including governance, zoning, land use, procurement, FOIA, contracts, and public meetings. This position offers the opportunity to work directly with municipal leaders and influence how local governments serve their communities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Advise municipal clients on matters including governance, contracts, land use, zoning, FOIA, procurement, and public meetings.
  • Draft and review ordinances, resolutions, contracts, and legal opinions.
  • Represent localities in administrative proceedings, litigation, and public hearings.
  • Monitor legal developments impacting municipal clients and provide proactive guidance.
  • Collaborate with attorneys across practice areas to deliver integrated legal services.
  • Build and maintain relationships with elected officials, municipal staff, and public stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
  • Active member of the Virginia State Bar in good standing.
  • At least five years of experience practicing Local Government / Municipal Law in Virginia.
  • Strong knowledge of municipal operations, governance, zoning, FOIA, procurement, and land use.
  • Exceptional legal writing, public speaking, and client communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing to a collaborative team environment.
