Position Title: Non-Medical Trustee
Organisation: European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS)
Location: Europe-based (Remote, with periodic in-person meetings) The role requires
European travel. Quarterly meetings are held at different locations
Position Type: Trustee, non-executive, voluntary (travel expenses reimbursed)
Term: Eight years (non-renewable) Four years with the potential to review for a further four.
Governance Structure
ESCRS is governed by a Board of Trustees. The current composition includes:
- Three trustees with ophthalmology backgrounds
- Two trustees with business and financial backgrounds
We are now seeking to appoint a non-medical (non-MD) trustee. This person will replace a medical Trustee who has completed his term of office. The Society generally seeks to maintain a balance within the Board of Trustees between clinical leadership and business/financial expertise, to ensure strong financial and strategic oversight.
Role Overview
Whatever your professional background the incoming Non-Medical Trustee will contribute broad business insight and strategic acumen to the Board. They will play a critical role in shaping financial strategy, evaluating commercial opportunities, and reinforcing sound governance practices in support of ESCRSs mission and sustainability.
Key Responsibilities
- Contribute to shaping the Society's long-term vision and strategic initiatives
- Provide guidance on financial planning, risk management, and investment strategy
- Support governance excellence and compliance with relevant regulatory requirements
- Advise on contractual, legal, and commercial matters including negotiations and partnerships
- Participate in working groups or committees aligned with their expertise
- Act as a constructive and independent voice within Board discussions
- Promote the Society's interests where appropriate
Candidate Profile
Essential Experience:
- A senior executive or board-level leader
- Successful experience building and managing businesses
Desirable
- Previous governance or trustee experience, particularly within complex or international organisations, is desirable
- Experience of working with outsourcers
- Leading and managing professional service organisations
Key Competencies:
- Strong commercial awareness
- Experience with corporate governance, risk assessment, and fiduciary responsibility
- Excellent negotiation and strategic advisory skills
- Sound judgment, critical thinking, and the ability to operate independently
- High ethical standards and discretion
- Proven track record of success in business, law or finance or related professions
Language & Geography:
- Fluency in English is essential (spoken and written); non-native speakers must demonstrate superior command of the language
