About the job Chief Executive
Purpose of the Role:
This is a key strategic, multi-faceted role, leading and taking the charity on to the next phase of our journey. This role offers an exciting opportunity for an inspirational leader who will motivate staff to continue our work as a prominent medical research funder.
Central to the role is the ability to build external relationships and proactively engage with a range of stakeholders, including donors, larger funding bodies and commercial companies.
Responsibilities:
Strategy & Governance
Responsible with the Board to set and deliver BRUKs strategic and policy direction to identify opportunities for growth, while ensuring BRUK continues to innovate and develop to meet the charities aims.
- Informing Trustees and developing strong relationships with stakeholders on the ongoing work of BRUK, as well as future plans and proposals
- Developing key strategic relationships including identifying partnerships, collaboration or merger opportunities which could further the aims of BRUK
Maintaining an awareness of the risks and changes in the external environment that affect BRUK
- Working with the Board to ensure that the appropriate governance structures are compliant with its legal and regulatory obligations
- Scanning horizons to identify and actively manage risk, working to identify opportunities and threats, working closely with the Board to ensure and preserve the standards and reputation of the charity.
- Act as the guardian of BRUKs reputation and core values of the organisation

Fundraising
Maximising income for the charity and amplifying revenue with the fund-raising team
- Supporting the Head of Fundraising in order to maximise income for BRUK, and working to ensure sustainable income from individual, corporate, legacy and grant makers
- Ensuring commercial activities are effectively managed and generate maximum benefits for the Charity
- Exploring and investigating new opportunities and exploring all opportunities for raising money within the fund-raising strategy
Financial
Working with the Board to ensure financial and operational procedures are in place to ensure an effective day to day management of the charity
Exploring and investigating new opportunities for financial growth Working to ensure BRUKs financial wellbeing
Operational
Managing and motivating staff and volunteers, enabling them to work to their full potential
A leadership style which encourages open transparent communication at all levels, ensuring that staff and volunteers feel valued and supported
Establishing the mechanisms for assessing BRUKs impact
Stakeholders & External
- Responsible for ensuring that processes are in place so that BRUK can fund the best research with it early career researchers focused on coloproctology
- Working with the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain & Ireland of whom we are the lead charity
- Working with small disease-specific charities and individual funders who wish to restrict awards to certain disease areas
- Protecting, enhancing and promoting the profile, brand and reputation of the Charity
- Ensuring that BRUKs website, social and other media presence are effective and projecting the right messaging
- Representing the organisation at relevant events and media opportunities, including developing a presence at the annual meeting of the ACPGBI
Grants
Ensuring that the process for assessing, awarding and monitoring grants is efficient, fair, robust, lawful and leads to BRUK having the maximum positive impact for both early career researchers, patients and all other appropriate stakeholders
- Ensuring there are appropriate and efficient systems in place for assessing the impact of grants (on both the research subject and the researchers themselves)
