Job brief

As a member of this committed team, you will support the care and development of the children and young people in the home, using your own personal skills, life experiences and understanding to empower the children and young people to achieve their full potential.

You will have an ability/willingness to understand and manage challenging behaviour including aggression and violence using a range of de-escalation techniques, using physical intervention as a last resort. Full in-house training will be provided

Responsibilities

    • Responsible for directly supporting children and young people within the home, ensuring regulatory requirements/ codes of practice are followed.
    • Support the planning process for children and young people, contributing to the assessment of individual needs and the development of care plans.
    • Support children/ young people to make decisions about their daily lives.
    • Work collaboratively with colleagues to ensure that children/ young people live in a healthy and homely environment.
    • Contribute to supporting children / young people to develop their independence skills in preparation for adulthood.
    • Contribute to the effectiveness of the home in meeting the outcomes of all children/ young people living there.
    • Facilitate contact with children and young people’s families to ensure that the children/ young people receive appropriate care.
    • Support children/ young people to access education and pursue their particular interests to develop their independence in preparation for adulthood.
    • Develop necessary skills and competence to shift lead.
    • Specific individual and shared targets and objectives are defined annually within the performance management framework.

Requirements

    • Experience of working with children/ young people in a paid or voluntary capacity; or in residential care with other service users.
    • An understanding and ability to promote people’s equality, diversity, and rights.
    • An understanding of your responsibility to protect children from abuse/harm.
    • The ability to use technology to record key client information.
    • The ability to contribute to the development and review of care plans,
    • The ability to encourage young people to develop and maintain a positive sense of identity.
    • A willingness to develop knowledge about/ experience in a range of direct working practices with children and young people with disabilities.
    • The ability/willingness to understand and manage challenging behaviour including aggression and violence using a range of de-escalation techniques, using physical intervention as a last resort.
    • A basic understanding of child development and the ability to promote children’s equality, diversity, and rights.
    • GCSE level C (4) in Maths and English is desirable
    • To hold or be willing to achieve the ‘level three diploma’ children and young people’s workforce – social care pathway or an NVQ equivalent.
    • The shift patterns (up to 37 hours) over a 7-day rota) require staff to work two out of three weekends and Bank Holidays including Christmas and New Year. You will be expected to sleep in and be on call overnight on a regular basis depending on the needs of the service.
      Please be aware that you need to be able to start work at 6.45am.
