Job Summary:
The Historic Preservation Specialist supports the identification, evaluation, and protection of culturally and historically significant sites. This role involves conducting historical research, documenting architectural and cultural resources, assessing sites for preservation value, and ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local historic preservation regulations. The Specialist serves as a key resource in guiding planning and development projects while safeguarding the integrity of historic assets.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct detailed historical research on properties, sites, and districts to gather background information, context, and significance.

  • Evaluate historic structures, buildings, and cultural resources for architectural, historical, or cultural importance.

  • Prepare comprehensive reports, surveys, and documentation detailing historical significance, site conditions, and preservation recommendations.

  • Support compliance with preservation laws, regulations, and guidelines, including the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) and local historic preservation ordinances.

  • Assist in the development of preservation plans, conservation strategies, and mitigation recommendations for proposed projects.

  • Collaborate with architects, planners, government agencies, and stakeholders on preservation-related initiatives.

  • Maintain accurate records of site evaluations, research findings, and project documentation.

  • Monitor and document changes to historic properties to ensure ongoing protection and compliance.

  • Stay current with preservation standards, techniques, and emerging trends in the field of historic preservation.

  • Provide guidance and recommendations to project teams regarding adaptive reuse, restoration, and preservation best practices.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in History, Historic Preservation, Architecture, Cultural Resource Management, or a related field.

  • Proven experience conducting historic site evaluations, architectural surveys, or cultural resource assessments.

  • Knowledge of historic preservation standards, guidelines, and regulatory frameworks at the federal, state, and local levels.

  • Strong research, analytical, and documentation skills.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for preparing reports and collaborating with stakeholders.

  • Detail-oriented with the ability to maintain accurate records and reports.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

  • Familiarity with digital documentation tools, GIS mapping, and architectural survey methods is a plus.
