Job Summary:
The Historic Preservation Specialist is responsible for conducting thorough research, documentation, and analysis of historic structures and architectural resources. This role supports planning, preservation, and regulatory compliance efforts by providing expert insights into the historical and architectural significance of properties. The specialist works closely with planning departments, preservation boards, architects, and other stakeholders to ensure that historic resources are accurately recorded, evaluated, and preserved in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations.
Key Responsibilities:

Conduct field surveys and on-site inspections of historic structures, landscapes, and districts to document architectural features, construction methods, and historical context.

Compile and maintain detailed records of historic properties, including photographs, drawings, and written descriptions.

Research historical documents, archives, maps, and previous studies to provide comprehensive background information on architectural and cultural significance.

Prepare detailed historical and architectural reports, including evaluations of integrity, significance, and eligibility for preservation programs or designations.

Provide recommendations for preservation, rehabilitation, or adaptive reuse of historic resources in alignment with applicable preservation standards and regulations.

Assist in the development of preservation plans, guidelines, and planning initiatives to guide decision-making by municipalities, developers, and property owners.

Collaborate with architects, planners, contractors, and regulatory agencies to ensure preservation considerations are incorporated into development and planning projects.

Stay current on preservation laws, guidelines, and best practices, including the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties and relevant state and local regulations.

Participate in public meetings, presentations, and outreach to educate stakeholders about historic resources and preservation strategies.
Qualifications:

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Architectural History, Historic Preservation, History, or a closely related field.

Proven experience conducting historic property surveys, evaluations, and documentation.

Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local historic preservation regulations, standards, and guidelines.

Excellent research, writing, and analytical skills, with the ability to produce comprehensive reports.

Proficiency in documentation tools, including GIS, CAD, digital photography, and other relevant software.

Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Effective communication skills to convey historical findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.
