Job Openings Design Specialist

About the job Design Specialist

The Design Specialist is a pre-sales role that engages directly with Optus Enterprise (OE) customers and internal stakeholders to design, price, and validate solutions across one or more technology towers, with a strong focus on fixed carriage products and contemporary WAN services. Acting as the technical lead during pre-sales and solution design phases, the role ensures seamless integration of OE services into customer ICT environments, educates stakeholders on new design possibilities and operational capabilities, and uses approved architectures, pricing models, and Optus toolsets to deliver outstanding customer experience and financial outcomes.

Job Description

The Solution Design team is integral to the sales engagement process, contributing to exemplary customer experiences by:

  • Advising on OE fixed carriage products and broader technology towers to meet customer requirements.
  • Designing and configuring contemporary WAN solutions (e.g., SD‑WAN, IPVPN/MPLS, Internet, Ethernet access, cloud connectivity) for integration into customer ICT environments.
  • Educating customers on architecture, design principles, operational aspects, and self‑serve portal capabilities for OE WAN services.
  • Supporting quoting and pre‑sales with detailed, accurate proposals aligned to approved architectures and pricing models.
  • Validating carriage orders against design intent to ensure delivery fidelity and commercial accuracy.
  • Collaborating with Account Teams and customers to shape solutions that balance technical excellence, customer experience, and financial outcomes.

Key Factors

  • Effective collaboration with internal teams and vendors to gather design details, access options, and cost components.
  • Deep understanding of enterprise ICT environments and ability to hold technical discussions with customers and peers.
  • Consulting and coaching skills to enhance stakeholder understanding of OE offerings and design choices.
  • Continuous improvement mindset: contribute to product, process, and tooling enhancements; promote standardised delivery patterns.
  • Tool proficiency: develop and maintain in‑depth knowledge of OE design/quoting tools and ordering systems.

Role Objectives

  • Support OE sales teams through detailed design, access qualification, cost/pricing, proposal generation, and handover to delivery for fixed carriage and WAN solutions.
  • Act as technical lead for contemporary WAN solutions, educating customers on transformative capabilities and demonstrating self‑serve portals and configuration workflows.
  • Investigate customer ICT environments and architect integration strategies that are robust, standardised, and repeatable.
  • Serve as SME on OE products, services, architectures, processes, and toolsets sharing knowledge across account teams, customers, and improvement initiatives.
  • Ensure accuracy and compliance with approved architectures, pricing models, commercial guardrails, and ordering requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Pre-sales engagement: qualify opportunities, elicit requirements, and advise on OE fixed carriage product selection based on enterprise ICT context.
  • Solution design & pricing: design and price solutions against approved architectures/pricing models; produce HLD/LLD, BOMs, and costed proposals using OE toolsets.
  • Access qualification: validate network access options, feasibility, and costs; coordinate with vendors and internal provisioning teams.
  • Demonstrations: convey new possibilities of contemporary WAN services; demonstrate self‑serve portals and decision workflows for WAN design/configuration.
  • Integration design: work closely with customers to define configurations for OE service integration (routing, security overlays, policy, performance).
  • Order and configuration governance: document and input OE product configurations into ordering systems; validate carriage orders vs design intent; manage assumptions, risks, and dependencies.
  • Tender and proactive quoting: participate in RFPs/RFIs and proactive bids; ensure accurate pricing of carriage components and services.
  • Handover to delivery: create clear design artifacts and transition materials; support delivery teams in design clarifications and change control.
  • Standards & patterns: promote standardised solution patterns; maintain reusable design templates and best-practice documentation.
  • Continuous improvement: feedback into product roadmaps, process optimization, and tooling enhancements (including quoting workflows).
  • Managed Network Services (MNS): Support customer solutions by managing modifications, additions, and changes to implemented MNS solutions.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to conduct feasibility studies for connectivity and infrastructure projects.
  • Customer-Centric Approach: Demonstrated commitment and proven track record of delivering exceptional customer experiences with a strong service-oriented mindset.
  • Compliance & Risk Management: Maintain 100% adherence to compliance and risk training requirements, ensuring operational excellence.

Skills and Competencies

  • Technical expertise in WAN architectures and enterprise ICT environments (e.g., SD‑WAN, IPVPN/MPLS, Internet, Ethernet/NNI, cloud connectivity, security overlays).
  • Communication & stakeholder engagement: ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear, customer-friendly language.
  • Commercial acumen: understanding of pricing models, TCO/ROI, margins, and commercial guardrails in pre‑sales contexts.
  • Tool proficiency: hands-on with OE design/quoting tools, ordering systems, and documentation standards.
  • Design governance: rigor in aligning to approved architectures, policies, and standardised delivery.
  • Collaboration across sales, product, engineering, delivery, and vendor ecosystems.
  • CPQ Expertise: Hands-on experience with CPQ solutions, preferably AMDOCS CPQ platform, to drive efficient and accurate quoting processes.

Security & Collaboration Tools: Knowledge of security technologies (e.g., Cisco, Palo Alto) and collaboration platforms such as Microsoft Teams
