Position Summary
The Child and Youth Worker provides direct care, supervision, and support to youth living in a residential group home environment. Youth served may present with trauma histories, behavioural challenges, mental health needs, and involvement with the child welfare system.
Staff are responsible for maintaining a safe, structured, and supportive living environment while implementing individualized care plans, promoting life skills development, and ensuring compliance with program policies and child welfare regulations.
Key Responsibilities
Youth Supervision and Care
- Provide active supervision of youth in accordance with assigned supervision levels such as continuous supervision, line of sight, or intermittent checks.
- Ensure the safety and wellbeing of youth within the residence and during community activities.
- Support youth in maintaining daily routines including school attendance, meals, hygiene, and personal responsibilities.
- Support youth with emotional regulation and behavioural management using trauma-informed approaches.
Behavioural Support and Crisis Intervention
- Implement individualized care plans and behavioural support strategies.
- Respond to crisis situations using approved de-escalation techniques.
- Follow established protocols for incidents including AWOL events, aggression, self-harm risk, or medical concerns.
- Conduct safety and wellness checks when required.
Program Implementation
- Facilitate life skills development including cooking, budgeting, hygiene, and time management.
- Support youth in recreational activities, appointments, school engagement, and community access.
- Promote positive relationships and healthy peer interactions.
- Encourage participation in structured programming and routines.
Documentation and Reporting
- Complete daily shift logs and required documentation.
- Prepare incident reports and serious occurrence documentation when required.
- Maintain accurate records of youth behaviour, progress, and significant events.
- Communicate updates to supervisors and relevant professionals including CAS workers.
Collaboration
- Work collaboratively with supervisors, clinicians, and placing agencies.
- Participate in team meetings and program planning.
- Maintain professional communication with youth, families, and external service providers.
Household Responsibilities
- Assist with maintaining a clean and organized living environment.
- Prepare meals and support youth with household routines.
- Ensure the residence meets health and safety standards.
Minimum Qualifications
- Child and Youth Care Diploma or Degree
- Social Work Degree or Social Service Worker Diploma
- Psychology, Criminology, or related degree with relevant experience
- Equivalent experience in residential youth care may be considered.
Required Certifications
- Standard First Aid and CPR-C
- Nonviolent Crisis Intervention or equivalent crisis prevention training
- Police Vulnerable Sector Check (valid within 6 months)
- Valid drivers licence
Preferred Experience
- Experience working in residential group homes
- Experience supporting youth involved with the child welfare system
- Experience working with youth presenting trauma-related behaviours
- Knowledge of trauma-informed care practices
- Knowledge of youth mental health and behavioural support strategies
