About the job Nursery Officer
Primary Purpose
The Nursery Officer will be responsible for overseeing all managerial functions including hiring and training staff, ordering stock, managing accounts, and responding to customer queries. The incumbent will also be required to grow and maintain, trees, shrubs, and flowers.
To ensure success as a Nursery Officer, the incumbent should have in-depth knowledge of horticulture, excellent managerial skills, and a passion for customer service.
Production Management
To lead the production of the Nursery toward profitability by:
- Managing employees by creating work schedules, setting priorities, and ensuring that task allocated are completed on time and efficiently
- Supervising the day-to-day operations of the nursery, including watering plants, fertilizing them, and monitoring insect and disease infestation
- Ensuring that all plant materials are purchased legally and that all permits are in order
- Overseeing the day-to-day operations of the nursery to ensure that it runs efficiently and profitably
Operations
- Coordinating inventory, procurement, clerical, record keeping and marketing activities related to nursery plants
- Coordinating delivery and sales of all plants
- Determining pricing of all plants, and ensure input on system
- Coordinating sales activities with wholesale clients, from issuing quote to plant delivery
- Managing tendering process of plants
- Developing Research and development that will help the team.
Maintenance of Equipment
- Proper planning of daily works of machinery
- Ensuring proper functioning of all machines and equipment
- Ensuring proper maintenance are carried out all vehicles and equipments
Finance
- Determining types and quantities of horticultural plants to be grown, based on budgets and projected sales volume
- Preparing of OPEX and CAPEX budget
Strategic Working Relationship
- Ensuring effective communications and mechanisms for resolving conflicts among the various participants;
- Communicating effectively with suppliers and service providers responsible for supply of products and land preparation;
- Co-ordinating the efforts of all parties involved in different phases of plant production, which include workers, consultants, contractors, and customers;
- Monitoring the progress of each stage of plant production on a regular basis and attend regular status meetings.
Sales & Procurement
- Provide prompt and efficient customer service to internal (Procurement department, etc.) and external customers
- Foster constructive working relationship with internal and external stakeholders including suppliers, service providers, customers, regulators, etc
Health & Safety
- Ensuring compliance with the Health & Safety regulations in terms of workers tools and equipments.
- Ensuring that Hazards are identified and eliminated
University Education:
- Bachelors Degree in Agriculture or in a related field;
Competencies required:
- Excellent communication skills with fluency in English and French;
- Self-motivated, dynamic, entrepreneurial, team player;
- Good client management and goodwill building ability;
- Ability to plan and organize team effort.
- Knowledge in identification of pests and diseases
- Proper Planning (What, when, why and how to plant)
- Horticulture
- Knowledge in Landscaping designs and implementations
Experience:
- At least 5 years proven track record in the same field
