Our Performing Arts teacher works with 6th through 8th grade students. Theater, performing arts games, storytelling, movement, and interdisciplinary performance are all part of the vision for our middle school performing arts electives. The ideal candidate will be a skilled actor, knowledgeable performance artist (including production, direction, and playwriting elements), and possess strong classroom management skills. Additionally, the individual in this role will support our class teachers in the creation of their annual class plays, providing feedback and assistance. They will also have the opportunity to participate in Mountain Sage faculty meetings and seasonal festivals.
The Performing Arts Teacher is responsible for leading two middle school elective classes per week. Please see the times, course titles, and class descriptions below:
Wednesdays from 2:30-3:30pm - Performance Skills
Performers will concentrate on developing a wide range of vocal, physical, and imaginative skills. They will be challenged to break out of their comfort zone while tapping into their own creativity, gain self-confidence, and experience working collaboratively with others. These concepts are fundamentals that all performers work on to continue their growth as an artist.
Fridays from 8:30-10:15am - Performing Arts and Theatre
Being in a play is more than just memorizing lines its telling a great story while collaborating with all of the other actors and artists. In this 90 minute theater class, students will dive deeper into theater study. Using scenes, plays, and devised work they will come to see that what a character says is often only the tip of the iceberg. Objectives, actions, tactics, and emotions lie beneath the words. Students will learn how to use acting tools to discover and express these things on stage.
Required Skills:
- Demonstrated ability to effectively teach a wide age range (6-14 years old)
- Strong knowledge of acting techniques, including physical acting, emotional connection, motivation, character study, and scene work
- Expertise in teaching movement, including gesture, choreography, style, ensemble work, and improvisation
- Proven ability to teach playwriting, covering monologue, dialogue, plot structure, and theme development
- Experience instructing storytelling, incorporating myth, archetype, and narrative across past and present contexts
- Ability to create and deliver meaningful, engaging lessons through physical and movement-based classes
- Skilled in developing curricula that foster social and emotional skills
- Focus on global performance traditions, emphasizing diverse cultural perspectives beyond Western or Greek styles
- Capacity to work compassionately with students facing stage fright, anxiety, and varying developmental levels, utilizing physical movement as a tool for confidence-building
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelors Degree in a related field of study
- Performing arts experience and knowledge
- 2+ years classroom teaching experience
- Successful completion of fingerprinting and background checks
- Physical capability to stand and sit for extended periods, as well as the ability to learn and play outdoors in various weather conditions
The pay range starts at $30.00 per hour and is dependent upon licensure and relevant experience. Hours will vary but will probably average between 10-15/week.
