Position: Senior System Engineer (Firewall Administration)

Location: Bonn Hardtberg, Frankfurt, Berlin, München, Wilhelmshaven, Rheinbach, Leipzig (One person will be hired for each location)

Position Overview

The Senior System Engineer is responsible for the analysis, implementation, and documentation of firewall configurations within a complex IT infrastructure environment. The role ensures that required network communications are securely enabled while maintaining compliance with established IT security policies and standards.

Key Responsibilities

Firewall Request Handling

• Analyze and evaluate incoming firewall requests from ticketing systems
• Review technical and functional requirements including source/target systems, ports, protocols, and communication flows
• Coordinate with application owners, requestors, and network teams to clarify requirements
• Assess requests in accordance with IT security policies

Firewall Rule Implementation

• Configure and implement firewall rules across centralized and decentralized environments
• Adjust and optimize existing rule sets following the principle of least privilege
• Execute changes in alignment with established change management processes
• Ensure minimal disruption to existing network communications

Testing & Validation

• Perform functional testing of implemented firewall rules
• Analyze network traffic and logs for troubleshooting and validation
• Support business units during communication validation processes

Documentation

• Maintain complete and accurate documentation of all firewall configurations
• Update configuration records and network documentation
• Ensure audit-compliant documentation of all changes

Operations & Optimization

• Regularly review firewall rules for necessity, efficiency, and security compliance
• Identify and remove outdated or redundant rules
• Contribute to continuous improvement of firewall and network security processes

Qualifications & Skills

Education & Certifications

• Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience
• Certification in network or security technologies (e.g., CCNP or comparable)

Professional Experience

• Minimum 5 years of experience in network administration or a similar role
• Proven experience in firewall configuration and network security environments

Technical Skills

• Strong knowledge of firewall technologies and network protocols
• Experience with change management and IT service management processes
• Ability to analyze network traffic and troubleshoot connectivity issues
• Familiarity with ticketing systems and configuration documentation

Languages

• German: C1 level
• English: B1 level
