Job Description:
A Surgical Neurophysiologist will work in an intense, demanding, fast-paced, detail-oriented environment in the operating room that requires staff to be organized yet flexible. Under supervision of the regional manager, performs preoperative assessment of patient, conducts intraoperative testing using currently accepted electrophysiologic techniques. Compiles real-time collection for interpretation of data and completes post-operative reports and billing forms. Work is completed in the operating room in a closed, somewhat isolated environment for hours at a time. Staff must work in unison with the OR team and display respect for one another. IONM requires highly accurate job performance as errors could seriously endanger patients' health.

Education and Qualifications:

  • Masters in an appropriate field preferred, Bachelors degree or equivalent experience required.
  • Candidate must have active CNIM (Certification in Neurophysiologic Intraoperative Monitoring) designation.
  • Candidate should have strong interpersonal, communication, organizational and technology skills.
  • Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathologic processes, and aseptic techniques.
  • Knowledge of electrophysiological equipment used in performing tests on patients, along with correct procedures followed in conducting tests and examinations.
  • Ability to evaluate various electronic and neurophysiologic waveforms.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills necessary to interact with medical staff, patients, visitors, and other hospital employees.
  • Displays vigilance in infection control protocol including hand hygiene, aseptic and sterile technique and low-level disinfection procedures.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with existing and potential customers by means of visiting the customer facility or contacting directly via phone.

Responsibilities: 

  • Set up equipment appropriately based on type of procedure taking care to protect the equipment and keeping it out of the OR staff's way.
  • Calibrates, evaluates and adjusts equipment, optimizing recording and stimulation parameters, to acquire relevant data and information.
  • Implements appropriate troubleshooting methods, such as adjusting stimulation, to assure accurate recording of information.
  • Keeps equipment clean and in proper working order, follows contact time protocol, reports malfunctions to manager and Operations Manager/ Information Systems manager.
  • Measures and accurately applies recording electrodes in a timely and efficient manner, according to the international 10-20 Electrode Placement System.
  • Ability to apply different types of electrodes to a patients anatomy in an efficient and precise method in preparation of monitoring a surgical procedure
  • Arrives fully prepared to monitor assigned procedure(s) as well as any potential add-on cases or modalities. Preparation includes verified tests, documentation and supplies.
  • Interacts with surgical team and surgeons to provide Reader interpretive data regarding patients neurological status.
  • Identifies and eliminates physiological and non-physiological artifacts.
  • Recognizes normal patterns, normal variants, and abnormal patterns; understands medical and pharmacological/anesthetic conditions that influence the recording IONM modalities (e.g., EP, BAER, MEP); understands the clinical correlations between abnormal evoked potentials and various disease states.
  • Displays and labels waveforms and measures and calculates information such as latencies, voltages, and conduction times following established guidelines and protocols.
  • Accurately prepares all IONM logs and associated files, including a technical description of the IONM modalities recorded, proof that the modalities were recorded, with emphasis on the clinical observations in order to assist the interpreting physician with the final interpretation (professional report).
  • Completes technical report within 24 hours of the case completion.
  • Discusses monitoring plan with Surgeon prior to procedure.
  • Communicates IONM preferences to the anesthesia team based on the modalities being monitored.
  • Communicates all pertinent signs and symptoms or any potential contraindications with the Reader prior to the onset of monitoring.
  • Maintains communication with the Reader throughout procedure as appropriate.
  • Maintains ongoing communication with surgical team throughout the procedure as appropriate.

Salary:

  • $75k-$87.5k, salary per year
