General tasks
A quantity surveyor is, in essence, the financial manager of a large engineering project who is tasked with maximizing the value of the project for his/her client by producing a most favorable balance of cost and quality.
Responsibilities
- Prepare and manage material procurement schedules.
- Encourage and develop a culture of contractual awareness and ensure that contracts are fulfilled by rigidly maintaining records, contractual notifications, change control, etc.
- Prepare internal cost/value reports for upper management and other departments.
- Reviewing construction plans and preparing quantity requirements.
- Scrutinizing maintenance and material costs, as well as contracts to ensure the best deals.
- Liaising with site managers, clients, contractors, and subcontractors.
- Preparing reports, analyses, contracts, budgets, risk assessment, and other documents.
- Advising managers and clients on improvements and new strategies.
- Keeping track of materials and ordering more when required.
- Documenting any changes in design and updating budgets.
- Establishing and maintaining professional relationships with external and internal stakeholders.
Qualifications or skills the person must have
- Bachelor's degree in quantity surveying, engineering, management, or similar.
- Construction estimating or finance experienced is advantageous.
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
- Sound knowledge of construction.
- Excellent negotiating and interpersonal skills.
- In-depth understanding of construction, materials, strong estimating and financial analysis skills
- Ability to organize, plan, and strategize.
- Great networking abilities.
