General tasks
A quantity surveyor is, in essence, the financial manager of a large engineering project who is tasked with maximizing the value of the project for his/her client by producing a most favorable balance of cost and quality.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and manage material procurement schedules.
  • Encourage and develop a culture of contractual awareness and ensure that contracts are fulfilled by rigidly maintaining records, contractual notifications, change control, etc.
  • Prepare internal cost/value reports for upper management and other departments.
  • Reviewing construction plans and preparing quantity requirements.
  • Scrutinizing maintenance and material costs, as well as contracts to ensure the best deals.
  • Liaising with site managers, clients, contractors, and subcontractors.
  • Preparing reports, analyses, contracts, budgets, risk assessment, and other documents.
  • Advising managers and clients on improvements and new strategies.
  • Keeping track of materials and ordering more when required.
  • Documenting any changes in design and updating budgets.
  • Establishing and maintaining professional relationships with external and internal stakeholders.

Qualifications or skills the person must have

  • Bachelor's degree in quantity surveying, engineering, management, or similar.
  • Construction estimating or finance experienced is advantageous.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Sound knowledge of construction.
  • Excellent negotiating and interpersonal skills.
  • In-depth understanding of construction, materials, strong estimating and financial analysis skills
  • Ability to organize, plan, and strategize.
  • Great networking abilities.
