Exciting Financial Controller Opportunity

Opontia is on a mission to build the next-generation e-commerce group in the Middle East, Turkey, Eastern Europe, and Africa by acquiring and scaling high-performing e-commerce businesses selling on marketplaces, own websites, and social commerce. We are a team of e-commerce experts who are passionate about building a portfolio of best-in-class retail brands.

The Financial Controller reports to the Group Financial Controller and oversees the accounting function and manages all statutory and financial reporting. Key to the role is the upkeep of financial statements, company accounting consolidation, the trial balance, and all accounting related processes. The Financial Controller is continuously improving the way that we present, record and account for our business.

Key Responsibilities

Stakeholder Management

  • Owns and maintains relationships with third parties including auditors, tax authorities, consultants and other regulatory authorities,
  • Responsible for and owns the audit process with auditors for both group and statutory audits,
  • Assists the global management team with maintaining internal controls to safeguard company assets. Regularly is involved in suggesting added controls in all organizational departments,
  • Works with all departments to ensure accounting and business processes are in alignment,
  • Champions and works with others to eliminate clutter and simplify business processes.

Internal Audit, Controllership

  • Ensures Robust internal controls are properly defined maintained and controlled,
  • Reviews and proposes accounting policies in Turkey,
  • Ensures that Opontia operates within the regulatory and statutory laws of Turkey,
  • Responsible for local GAAP and Group standards of bookkeeping,
  • Owns the local ERP system execution.

Accounting Management

  • Owns, prepares and validates the Month-End closing process including validating accruals, journal entries and all working schedules prepared by the junior accountants on A/P, A/R, and vendor reconciliations,
  • Commits to finalizing month-end closing on the third working day of the month, challenges the team and other departments to ensure that this deadline is met,
  • Oversee the global accounting and IFRS application of all Opontias entities,
  • Actively supports other department managers with accounting related matters,
  • Performs daily, monthly, and other periodic accounting journal entry bookings in an accurate and timely nature,
  • Responsible for VAT and other applicable tax reconciliations, filing and documentation,
  • Prepares financial statements according to IFRS,
  • Owns Accrual ledgers, provisions, cash reconciliations, A/P reconciliations and vendor reconciliations,
  • Responsible for maintaining all accounting records according to statutory regulations,
  • Responsible for all bank reconciliations at the end of the month,
  • Work closely with outsourced accountants to unify the chart of accounts and mirror local books to the group's standard IFRS application,
  • Identifies and recommends necessary changes in the accounting system to meet growing business needs.

Requirements & Skills

  • 10-12 total years of experience and at least 5 years of experience leading a large accounting team and function
  • Certified ACCA / ACA / CA / CPA
  • Experience building an accounting team from scratch
  • Multiple country and currency management is mandatory
  • Proficient in local GAAP and IFRS
  • Previous experience in Big 4 and reaching the role of at least assistant audit manager
  • Previous experience in MNC or large local conglomerate with exposure to startups
  • Strong leadership and strong interpersonal skills
  • Strong record of accounting process improvements
  • Fluency in Turkish and English is a MUST
