About the job FAR Compliance & Internal Controls Accountant
Position Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented and analytical FAR Compliance & Internal Controls Accountant to join our finance team. This role will serve as the primary resource for managing the companys projected FAR rate monthly and advancing the companys annual FAR overhead audit process. This role is critical in ensuring compliance with Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) Part 31 and supporting continuous improvement in expense oversight, internal controls, and cost recovery strategies. The ideal candidate will bring hands-on experience with FAR audits and preferably AEC industry familiarity, along with a creative, solution-oriented approach to navigating complex cost structures and compliance requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
FAR Audit & Compliance Leadership
- Serve as the main point of contact and subject matter expert for the companys annual FAR overhead audit
- Prepare, reconcile, and maintain all supporting schedules, analyses, and documentation related to the overhead rate
- Partner closely with external consultants and auditors to ensure smooth and timely completion of FAR audit
- Analyze indirect cost pools for compliance with FAR Part 31 and provide recommendations for optimal cost allocation
- Monitor unallowable cost activity and proactively identify opportunities for improvement or clarification in cost treatment
- Collaborate with leadership to develop creative, compliant approaches that yield favorable audit outcomes and efficient rate management
Expense & Labor Oversight
- Review and analyze direct and indirect labor and expenses for allowability, allocability, and reasonableness
- Perform monthly reconciliations of key accounts and identify variances or reclassifications as needed
- Support month-end close processes including journal entries, accruals, and cost adjustments
- Own and maintain the companys month-end and year-end consolidation file, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and consistency of financial data across entities/ERPs.
- Assist with developing dashboards and tracking tools to monitor the FAR rate throughout the year
Internal Controls & Policy Development
- Evaluate existing financial and operational processes for FAR compliance and recommend control enhancements
- Support development and documentation of internal control policies, SOPs, and compliance directives (i.e. timekeeping, expense reporting, procurement, etc)
- Conduct internal reviews to ensure adherence to both company policy and FAR Part 31 standards
- Maintain organized, audit-ready documentation and contribute to a culture of continuous compliance
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Partner with F&A/IT, HR, and Operations to align internal controls with both the company and FAR standards
- Support education and awareness efforts across the organization regarding FAR-sensitive accounts and allowable/unallowable cost guidance
- Provide financial insights and analysis to support strategic decision-making
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- Experience working directly on FAR audits is required
- Experience with FAR compliance in an AEC (Architecture, Engineering, Construction) firm is strongly preferred
- 3-5 years of accounting experience, with demonstrated exposure to government contracting and indirect rate structures
- Deep understanding of FAR Part 31 and cost accounting principles
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to think creatively within regulatory frameworks
- Proficiency with ERP/accounting systems (Deltek Vantagepoint and BST experience a plus)
- Advanced Excel and financial modeling capability
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; able to convey complex financial concepts clearly
