Position Overview
The Drop Bury Technician is responsible for installing and burying fiber optic service drops from mainline distribution networks to residential or commercial customer locations. This role involves trenching, placing conduit or direct bury fiber, and completing site restoration in accordance with client specifications and safety standards.
Drop Bury Technicians work closely with fiber installation teams, construction supervisors, and restoration crews to ensure last-mile fiber connectivity is installed efficiently and with minimal disruption to customer property.
Key Responsibilities
- Install fiber optic drop lines from network terminals to customer premises
- Perform trenching, hand digging, and conduit placement for fiber drop installations
- Utilize equipment such as vibratory plows, trenchers, and hand tools
- Ensure proper placement and protection of fiber and conduit during installation
- Perform site restoration, including replacing soil, sod, and landscaping as required
- Identify and avoid existing underground utilities by following locate markings
- Follow all OSHA safety standards and company safety protocols
- Maintain job documentation, photos, and work completion reports
- Communicate with supervisors regarding job progress and field conditions
- Maintain tools, vehicles, and equipment in safe working condition
Required Qualifications
- Experience in fiber drop bury, underground utility, or telecommunications construction
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Ability to read and follow service drop work orders and job instructions
- Strong attention to safety and quality workmanship
- Ability to perform physically demanding work including digging and lifting
- Valid driver’s license
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with fiber optic construction or last-mile fiber installations
- Experience operating trenchers, plows, or small construction equipment
- Knowledge of underground utility locate markings and excavation safety practices
- Experience with telecom construction restoration requirements
- CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) is a plus
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift 50+ pounds regularly
- Ability to bend, kneel, and work in trenches or confined spaces
- Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in varying weather conditions
