Controls Engineer

Location: Orlando, Florida

Salary: $111,000 – $140,000

Relocation: Limited assistance available

Travel: Typically ~10% (up to 30% during project phases)

An established engineering and automation company is seeking an experienced Controls Engineer to work on large-scale automation and control system integration projects.

This role involves end-to-end control system design, from concept development through installation and commissioning. Projects involve complex automation systems across industries including advanced manufacturing and large-scale automated environments.

You will play a key role designing control architecture, developing PLC logic, and ensuring systems meet performance, safety, and reliability requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Design complete electrical and control systems from concept through implementation

Develop control architecture including hardware, software, and network design

Produce electrical panel designs, schematics, and power calculations

Program and implement PLC/DCS control systems

Develop logic using Ladder Logic and Structured Text

Support system commissioning, testing, and troubleshooting

Perform system analysis including:

Short circuit protection

Load flow and power consumption

Harmonics and noise mitigation

Network and processor timing analysis

Produce detailed engineering documentation including:

System descriptions and theory of operation

Control system design documentation

Software design and implementation plans

Test plans and commissioning documentation

Conduct hazard analysis and implement safety-critical control systems

Work closely with engineers, designers, and contractors across multi-disciplinary teams

Manage vendor scope to ensure designs meet safety, technical, and contractual requirements

Provide technical leadership and guidance to junior engineers and technicians

Assist with system start-up, integration, and commissioning activities

Required Experience

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or closely related discipline

5+ years' experience in controls engineering or automation systems

Experience designing control systems from concept stage

Strong experience with PLC programming (Ladder Logic required, Structured Text preferred)

Experience with major automation platforms such as Allen-Bradley or Siemens

Knowledge of electrical system design and industrial automation architecture

Experience producing engineering drawings using AutoCAD

Strong troubleshooting and system analysis skills

Experience working with industrial networks and distributed I/O systems

Desirable Experience

Programming experience in C++ or Visual Basic

Experience with functional safety systems (SIL / PL ratings)

Knowledge of hazard analysis and safety engineering

Experience with complex automated motion systems

Exposure to attractions or ride system engineering environments

Working Environment

This role involves a mix of engineering office work and on-site project environments, including industrial and construction sites. Engineers are expected to support installation and commissioning phases when required.
