Location: Madrid

Type of Contract: Full-Time

Position Summary:

An Equipment Automation Specialist is a technical role focused on ensuring that automated equipment in a pharmaceutical environment operates reliably, safely, and in full compliance with GMP requirements. The position sits at the intersection of engineering, digital systems, and manufacturing operations, with a strong emphasis on how equipment executes recipes, control strategies, and data workflows.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Configure and maintain automated equipment systems such as lyophilizers, bioreactors, autoclaves, or filling lines, ensuring accurate execution of recipes and process sequences.
  • Develop and update equipment recipes, including parameters, phases, and control logic aligned with process requirements and GMP standards.
  • Troubleshoot automation issues by diagnosing PLC, SCADA, HMI, or communication faults and restoring equipment functionality with minimal downtime.
  • Integrate equipment with higher‑level systems (MES, SCADA, data historians), ensuring seamless data flow and alignment with digital manufacturing workflows.
  • Support validation and qualification activities, including IQ/OQ/PQ, change control, and documentation of automated functions.
  • Ensure data integrity and compliance, maintaining audit trails, access controls, and system configurations according to regulatory expectations.
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams (Process Engineering, QA, IT, Manufacturing) to implement improvements and resolve deviations related to automation.

Skills and Knowledge Areas:

  • Strong understanding of automation platforms (PLC, SCADA, DCS, HMI).
  • Familiarity with GMP, GAMP 5, and data integrity principles.
  • Experience with equipment recipe management and control logic.
  • Ability to interpret P&IDs, functional specifications, and automation documentation.
  • Problem‑solving skills for complex equipment and software interactions.
  • Knowledge of networking, industrial communication protocols, and system integration.

Education and Background:

  • Bachelors degree in Engineering, Automation or related technical fields.
  • Additional training or certification in automation systems, control engineering, or pharmaceutical manufacturing technologies is advantageous.
  • Proven experience working with automated pharmaceutical equipment, including systems such as lyophilizers, bioreactors, autoclaves, filling lines, or other process‑critical machinery.
  • Strong knowledge of automation platforms such as PLCs, SCADA, DCS, and HMI interfaces, including configuration, troubleshooting, and logic interpretation.
  • Ability to develop, modify, and maintain equipment recipes, control parameters, and automated sequences aligned with process requirements.
  • Familiarity with industrial communication protocols (e.g., OPC, Modbus, Profibus, Ethernet/IP) and equipment integration with higher‑level systems like MES or data historians.
