Job Openings Structural Steel Estimator

About the job Structural Steel Estimator

About the Role

We are supporting an Australian client in establishing their first offshore hire within their estimating function. This role is a specialist Structural Steel Estimator position, focused on fabrication-level costing and detailed estimate breakdowns—not high-level or generalized construction estimating.

This is a hands-on, technical role suited for candidates who understand how steel components are actually fabricated and can confidently justify pricing based on real production inputs.

The role is split approximately:

  • 60% Estimating
  • 40% Coordination & Project Support (including drafting exposure)

You will work closely with a highly technical client and play a key role in delivering accurate, commercially sound estimates that directly impact project delivery.

Key Responsibilities

Estimating & Cost Analysis

  • Prepare detailed, bottom-up cost estimates for structural steel and fabrication projects
  • Break down and justify costs across:
    • Labor (including welding and fabrication time)
    • Materials
    • Workshop / production processes
  • Interpret and estimate from:
    • Fabrication drawings
    • Structural and engineering plans
  • Develop bill of materials (BOM)-level costing, ensuring accuracy and traceability
  • Validate estimates against actual project costs and fabrication outputs

Technical Coordination

  • Collaborate with internal teams on drawings, fabrication requirements, and project scope
  • Support coordination between estimating, drafting, and production teams
  • Assist in ensuring smooth handover of awarded projects to operations

Client Interaction & Commercial Support

  • Work directly with a technical, detail-oriented client
  • Clearly explain and defend estimating logic and pricing assumptions
  • Respond to project queries with both technical accuracy and commercial awareness

What We're Looking For

Required Experience

  • Strong background in structural steel or fabrication estimating
  • Proven experience in:
    • Workshop or fabrication-based costing
    • Labor and welding calculations
    • Detailed cost breakdowns (not high-level estimates)
  • Ability to explain estimating methodology clearly and logically
  • Experience working on:
    • Industrial, warehouse, or structural steel projects

Nice to Have

  • Exposure to AU, UK, or US projects or standards
  • Familiarity with drafting or fabrication workflows
  • Experience working in a remote or client-facing setup
