A well-established Australian accounting firm providing tax, business advisory, and compliance services to a diverse portfolio of clients including individuals, SMEs, and trusts. Due to ongoing growth, we are seeking a proactive and detail-oriented Tax Accountant to join our professional team.

As a Tax Accountant, you will be responsible for preparing and reviewing a range of tax returns, assisting clients with compliance obligations, and providing tax advisory support. The ideal candidate will have a strong working knowledge of Australian tax law and experience liaising with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO).

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and lodge tax returns for individuals, companies, partnerships, trusts, and SMSFs.
  • Prepare and lodge BAS, IAS, and other statutory ATO obligations.
  • Advise clients on income tax, GST, FBT, CGT, and payroll tax matters.
  • Conduct tax planning and assist in developing strategies to optimise tax positions.
  • Prepare financial statements and reconciliations for SME clients.
  • Liaise directly with clients to collect necessary financial data and answer tax-related queries.
  • Communicate with the ATO on behalf of clients regarding assessments, queries, and compliance reviews.
  • Stay updated on changes in Australian taxation legislation and apply changes as needed.
  • Support audit processes and liaise with external auditors when necessary.

Skills and Experience Required:

  • Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • CA or CPA qualified (or working towards).
  • Minimum 24 years' experience in a public practice or tax-focused role.
  • Strong understanding of Australian taxation law and ATO compliance.
  • Proficient in tax software such as Xero, MYOB, HandiTax, or similar.
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple client accounts and meet deadlines.

Desirable:

  • Experience with SMSFs and complex tax structures.
  • Familiarity with accounting software like Xero Practice Manager or Class.
