Senior Backend Engineer

Our client is a fast-growing consumer technology company building a popular mobile platform used by customers globally. The product helps users organise, manage, and interact with everyday content in a more seamless way, with a strong focus on automation, usability, and scalable backend systems.

They are now looking for a Backend Developer with strong Java experience to join their remote engineering team. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys owning backend systems, building new product features, improving performance, and working closely with senior technical and business leaders in a fast-moving environment.

What You'll Do

• Take ownership of backend development across key product features and platform improvements.
• Build and maintain scalable backend services using Java and modern backend frameworks.
• Improve system performance, reliability, latency, and data architecture.
• Design and implement backend solutions for new user-facing product features.
• Integrate with third-party APIs and external platforms.
• Support the development of automation, AI-assisted, and data-driven product capabilities.
• Debug complex edge cases and improve accuracy, reliability, and backend processing.
• Work closely with a small global team to deliver high-impact technical projects.
• Research and evaluate new technologies that can improve engineering speed and product capability.

What We're Looking For

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
• 3+ years of backend development experience using Java.
• Experience with Spring or similar backend frameworks.
• Strong understanding of RESTful APIs and third-party integrations.
• Experience with relational databases, preferably PostgreSQL.
• Familiarity with ORM tools such as Hibernate or similar.
• Experience with cloud infrastructure and services, ideally AWS.
• Comfortable working with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and infrastructure tools.
• Experience using AI tools to improve development workflows is highly valued.
• Familiarity with LLMs, NLP, or AI-driven product features is a strong advantage.
• Strong Git skills and experience working in agile environments.
• Ability to write and maintain clear API and technical documentation.
• Excellent written and verbal English communication skills.
• Detail-oriented, proactive, and comfortable working independently in a remote team.
• Startup or small-team experience is a plus.
