Job brief

We are looking for a highly proactive, hands-on Finance & Accounting Leader to oversee all financial operations in Japan. The role is primarily focused on strategic finance, including financial planning, forecasting, performance analysis, and decision support for the Japan CEO. Day-to-day accounting operations are supported by the Accounting Manager, but the successful candidate must have sufficient accounting expertise to oversee the work, ensure quality, and step in when needed.

Key Responsibilities :

Strategic & FP&A

  • Lead the financial planning and forecasting process for Japan, analyzing performance, risks, and opportunities.
  • Create and own the financial model and budget, updating monthly with actuals and variance analysis.
  • Analyze revenues, margins, and customer-level profitability to inform strategic decision-making.
  • Support pricing analysis and evaluate financial implications of potential clients and partnerships.
  • Collaborate with the Global Finance team on consolidation, scenario planning, and cross-entity reporting.

Accounting & Operations

  • Oversee all accounting operations including invoicing, payroll, payables, and receivables.
  • Manage monthly, quarterly, and year-end closing processes to ensure timely and accurate reporting.
  • Review journal entries, account reconciliations, and internal financial statements prepared by the Accounting Manager and external partners, and step in to resolve issues when necessary.
  • Liaise with external accounting firms, tax advisors, and auditors for statutory filings and compliance.
  • Maintain internal controls, approval workflows, and financial documentation.
  • Monitor cash flow and optimize working capital cycles.

Governance & Leadership

  • Ensure adherence to local accounting standards (J-GAAP) and group reporting under IFRS.
  • Act as the main finance contact for Japan, reporting directly to the Japan CEO and functionally to the Global Head of Finance.
  • Drive process improvements and implement scalable financial systems and tools as the company grows.

You need to have:

  • 8+ years of progressive experience in finance, including at least 3 years in FP&A and 3 years in accounting roles.
  • A resilient, "roll-up-your-sleeves" mindset to demonstrate ability to operate at both strategic and detailed levels, with the judgment to delegate effectively and the capability to step in when necessary.
  • Proven experience in a startup, tech, or fast-scaling environment.
  • Deep understanding of corporate finance, accounting principles, and financial analysis.
  • Experience with budgeting, forecasting, and financial modeling.
  • Strong working knowledge of Japanese accounting, tax, and labor regulations.
  • Excellent organizational and leadership skills; strong communication in both English (business level) and Japanese (native level).
  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field (Master's preferred).
  • CPA, USCPA, or equivalent qualification a plus.
