An Outpatient Medical Coder reviews outpatient medical records and assigns accurate diagnostic and procedure codes to support billing, compliance, and reimbursement processes.

Responsibilities

  • Review outpatient medical records and assign ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes

  • Code outpatient encounters including SDS (Same Day Surgery), OBS (Observation), and ED (Emergency Department) cases

  • Ensure coding accuracy based on clinical documentation and coding guidelines

  • Support proper claim submission and billing accuracy

  • Identify documentation gaps and coordinate with healthcare providers when needed

  • Follow HIPAA and healthcare compliance standards

  • Maintain productivity and quality coding standards

Qualifications

  • Must have at least 1 year of outpatient medical coding experience (SDS, OBS, ED)

  • Healthcare or Allied Health graduate preferred

  • Coding certification such as CPC or CCS-P is a plus

  • Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and outpatient coding system
