An Outpatient Medical Coder reviews outpatient medical records and assigns accurate diagnostic and procedure codes to support billing, compliance, and reimbursement processes.
Responsibilities

Review outpatient medical records and assign ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes

Code outpatient encounters including SDS (Same Day Surgery), OBS (Observation), and ED (Emergency Department) cases

Ensure coding accuracy based on clinical documentation and coding guidelines

Support proper claim submission and billing accuracy

Identify documentation gaps and coordinate with healthcare providers when needed

Follow HIPAA and healthcare compliance standards

Maintain productivity and quality coding standards
Qualifications

Must have at least 1 year of outpatient medical coding experience (SDS, OBS, ED)

Healthcare or Allied Health graduate preferred

Coding certification such as CPC or CCS-P is a plus

Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and outpatient coding system
