Research and Development Engineer I

The Research and Development Engineer I is responsible for supporting design, engineering, and project management activities in new product development (NPD) and business support projects .

Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

  • Assist in the design and development of new products for the railroad industry under the guidance of senior engineers.

  • Create and maintain documentation for NPD projects.

  • Perform cost estimation, feasibility analysis, engineering calculations, prototyping, and other tasks related to product development.

  • Coordinate NPD activities with suppliers, customers, and product management teams.

  • Develop 3D designs and detailed engineering drawings.

  • Conduct structural engineering analyses using hand calculations and finite element modeling.

  • Research materials, manufacturing processes, and design concepts for potential use in NPD projects.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including sales, procurement, and business development, during various phases of product development.

  • Provide timely and accurate written and verbal reports on NPD activities.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Experience, Education, & License Requirements

  • Bachelors degree in Mechanical or Civil Engineering required.

  • Masters degree in Engineering preferred.

  • 03 years of experience in a related role.

  • Prior involvement in all stages of product developmentfrom concept to commercializationpreferred.

Skills & Abilities

  • Proficiency in at least one CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, OnShape, or AutoCAD Inventor Suite) required.

  • Proficiency with ANSYS Structural FEA for complex engineering problem-solving required.

  • Strong knowledge of manufacturing methods such as casting, forging, rolling, metal extrusion, and plastics/elastomer processes including injection molding, transfer molding, thermoforming, and extrusion preferred.

  • Familiarity with design-for-manufacturing principles.

  • Solid understanding of structural mechanics and dynamics required.

  • Ability to produce high-quality design reports, test reports, and presentations using Microsoft Office.

  • Exposure to mechatronics, mechanical/electrical testing, sensor system design, instrumentation, and data processing preferred.

  • Strong project planning, data analysis, reporting, and communication skills essential.
