About the job Audiovisual Design Engineer
The Design Engineer will support preconstruction efforts by developing accurate, strategic estimates across low voltage systems including structured cabling, AV, security, sound masking, and public safety DAS/BDA.
This role blends estimating, technical design coordination, and vendor engagement. You will interpret complex plans, perform detailed take-offs, build competitive proposals, and collaborate with project management and engineering teams to ensure scope alignment and smooth handoff into execution.
This is primarily an office-based role in Raleigh, NC with occasional site visits and vendor meetings.
Key Responsibilities
- Review Division 27 and 28 drawings, specifications, bid manuals, and subcontractor requirements
- Perform detailed take-offs using Bluebeam Revu and estimating platforms
- Develop accurate labor models, BOMs, and material pricing based on real-world field conditions
- Build complete, competitive bid packages including assumptions, exclusions, and value engineering options
- Coordinate with vendors and subcontractors to validate scope and pricing
- Respond to RFIs, ASIs, and addenda while maintaining internal scope alignment
- Support device layout and pathway coordination using AutoCAD and Revit
- Follow up on open proposals and maintain relationships with GCs, electrical contractors, architects, and owner representatives
- Participate in preconstruction and kickoff meetings to ensure proper project handoff
- Track pricing trends and contribute to continuous estimating process improvement
Required Qualifications
- 5–10 years of experience in low voltage estimating, field design, or related technical role
- Strong background in structured cabling, AV, security, telecom, and low voltage systems
- Proven ability to interpret construction drawings and bid documents
- Experience estimating systems including:
- Structured cabling (Cat6, Cat6A, OM3/OM4 fiber, single-mode, IDF/MDF buildouts)
- AV systems (conference rooms, digital signage, paging, DSP systems)
- Security systems (IP CCTV, access control, electrified hardware)
- Sound masking deployments
- Public Safety DAS/BDA and emergency responder systems
- Proficiency with Bluebeam Revu and Excel
- Experience with estimating software such as Accubid, Esticom, or similar platforms
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD and Revit for device placement and pathway coordination
- RCDD certification preferred; BICSI experience a plus
- High school diploma required; degree in construction, engineering, or related field preferred
- Strong communication, organization, and time management skills
