Job Summary

The Surgical Coordinator is responsible for coordinating all aspects of tests, procedures, and surgeries while ensuring efficient workflow and communication between patients, providers, hospitals, and insurance carriers.

Essential Job Functions

  • Coordinate all aspects of tests, procedures, and surgeries under the direction of leadership and physicians
  • Schedule procedures in a prompt, polite, and helpful manner while following facility guidelines
  • Verify patient demographics, insurance coverage, benefits, and obtain precertification information
  • Coordinate procedure appointments with physician schedules and communicate any changes as needed
  • Arrange co-surgeons or surgical assistants and coordinate with other departments as appropriate
  • Ensure all pre-operative documentation is completed, including consent forms, history and physicals, and physician orders
  • Coordinate surgical appointments, medical clearances, and pre-admission testing appointments
  • Maintain block time guidelines and scheduling requirements
  • Coordinate required postoperative care under provider direction
  • Work with coding departments to obtain appropriate codes and reconcile surgical charges
  • Track completed and pending procedures, surgical testing, and pathology results
  • Provide excellent customer service and maintain professional communication with patients, visitors, and staff
  • Adapt to changing workflow needs and assist with cross coverage when necessary
  • Participate in surgical service meetings and maintain organizational standards of behavior

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Minimum of 2 years of related experience preferred
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt quickly to change
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and HIPAA guidelines preferred
  • Surgical coding knowledge including CPT and ICD-10 preferred
  • CPR certification preferred

  • Coordinates all aspects of tests, procedures, and surgeries under the direction and supervision of the Practice Supervisor or Manager and physician(s) in an efficient manner
  • Schedules procedures in a prompt, polite, and helpful manner while following facility guidelines and booking sheets; ensures proper equipment is ordered for surgery
  • Verifies patient demographics, insurance coverage, and benefits and obtains precertification information from payers
  • Coordinates procedure appointments within physician schedules and adjusts appointments as needed
  • Arranges for co-surgeons or assistants as needed and coordinates scheduling with other departments
  • Ensures pre-operative procedures are completed, including surgical documentation, consent forms, history and physicals, physician orders, and medical clearances
  • Coordinates pre-admission testing appointments with appropriate departments and follows up with results
  • Maintains block time guidelines for all hospitals
  • Coordinates required postoperative care under provider direction
  • Obtains surgical billing information from physicians and works with coding departments to obtain appropriate codes and reconcile surgical charges
  • Tracks completed and pending procedures, surgical testing, and pathology results
  • Provides excellent customer service and responds promptly to patient needs while maintaining professionalism and empathy
  • Displays cooperative interactions with others and accepts responsibility for assigned duties
  • Adapts work schedule to meet practice needs and assists with cross coverage when required
  • Participates in surgical service meetings and adheres to organizational standards of behavior

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Minimum of 2 years of related experience preferred
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills required
  • Ability to learn quickly and adapt in a changing environment
  • Medical office experience preferred
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and HIPAA guidelines preferred
  • Surgical coding knowledge including CPT and ICD-10 preferred
  • CPR certification preferred
