Position Summary

The Interventional Radiology (IR) Scrub Technologist serves as the primary sterile assistant during interventional radiology procedures. This role works directly alongside the Interventional Radiologist physician, managing sterile technique, procedural equipment, imaging systems, inventory, and patient flow to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality procedural outcomes.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical & Procedural Support

  • Acts as the first surgical assist during interventional radiology procedures (see approved procedure list).
  • Performs sterile preparation of access sites, including but not limited to femoral, jugular, radial, pedal, abdominal access, and biopsies.
  • Prepares and maintains the sterile field, including operative trays, devices, and supplies.
  • Manages all sharps, wires, catheters, and ancillary devices during procedures.
  • Prepares and loads catheters and wires; assists with arterial closure as directed by the physician.
  • Draws up and labels intravenous medications in accordance with the Medication Labeling Policy and Sterile Field Competency.
  • May perform instrument sterilization and package surgical instruments as needed.

Patient Care & Transport

  • Safely transports patients to and from the holding area and procedure suite.
  • Assists in patient positioning and procedural preparation to ensure comfort and safety.

Imaging & Equipment Operation

  • Operates angiography and ultrasound equipment, including patient positioning, troubleshooting, and accurate demographic entry.
  • Responsible for image and data transfer to PACS, including daily verification and documentation in the procedural logbook.
  • Documents radiation dose and fluoroscopy time for each procedure.

  • Adheres to radiation safety principles (ALARA) and ensures compliance with all radiation safety standards.
  • Maintains cleanliness of lead protective equipment and ensures radiation badge monitoring.

Inventory & Supply Management

  • Unpacks, organizes, and restocks interventional supplies and medical devices.
  • Previews daily and upcoming schedules to pull and prepare required inventory for all procedures.
  • Utilizes Spacetrax inventory management software to maintain daily par levels.
  • Adjusts inventory par levels as needed to support procedural volume.

  • Orders interventional supplies when inventory falls below par.

  • Communicates with IR Centers administration and vendors regarding supply needs and ordering.
  • Oversees inventory usage in collaboration with the IR Centers administrative team.
  • Runs monthly cycle count reports to ensure inventory accuracy.

  • Runs monthly expiration reports to ensure timely use of supplies.

Environmental & Safety Responsibilities

  • Cleans and resets procedure rooms post-procedure, including equipment and machinery.
  • Ensures proper disposal of hazardous waste in compliance with OSHA standards.
  • Maintains a clean, sanitary, and safe environment throughout all clinical areas.
  • Inspects facility equipment and instruments daily before and after procedures to ensure proper working condition.
  • Reports issues and makes recommendations for equipment repair or replacement.

Compliance & Professional Standards

  • Complies with HIPAA regulations and maintains strict patient confidentiality.
  • Follows all facility policies, procedures, and regulatory standards.

Training and Mentorship
  • Assists with onboarding and training of new Interventional Radiology Scrub Technologists and clinical staff.
  • Provides hands-on instruction in sterile technique, procedural workflows, equipment operation, radiation safety, and inventory processes.
  • Serves as a clinical resource for new hires, promoting adherence to departmental policies, safety standards, and best practices.
  • Supports competency validation and reinforces consistent clinical performance across the IR team.

Required Certifications

  • Basic Life Support (BLS)

And one of the following:

  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST)

  • American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT)

  • Registered Radiologic Technologist (RT)
