Our client is one of North America’s leading heavy civil contractors with operations in the US and Canada. With a growing portfolio of work in the infrastructure sector, we are looking for a Safety Manager to work on a new project coming in 2022. You will initially be based in the office in Vancouver during the planning phase mobilizing to site during execution.

Reporting to the Director of Safety, the Project Health & Safety Manager will be accountable for the project’s safety performance, and for the effective implementation of the Safety Management System. This role is responsible for leading the project safety team in supporting field operations and delivery of project objectives through safety excellence and effective stakeholder management. The project safety manager provides a high-level detailed review of provincial and federal expectations and metrics, interfacing directly with corporate HSE Director, project management, peers, subordinates, and client personnel, ensuring project site safety plans are aligned with corporate values, requirements, and initiatives and in accordance with local, provincial and/or federal regulations.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain and promote a strong safety culture for all employees, vendors, and customers and follow all safety policies, procedures and regulations. Identify and communicate workplace hazards and correct or seek assistance in correcting unsafe actions or conditions.
  • Responsible for moving the safety, mandate forward, influence the stakeholders and be our clients advocate for all related policies and programs.
  • Provide project management teams a subject matter expert service with respect to safety on the project
  • Assisting in the development of the PSSP to ensure it meets or exceeds all applicable the requirements of the clients and highlights plans, policies, practices, procedures and programs developed from previous experiences in executing similar work in in British Columbia;
  • Participate in the risk assessment process on a regular basis to ensure construction risks are reviewed and control measures are identified in the Project Hazard Assessment
  • Lead a team of safety to successfully contribute to ensuring regular site inspections, coaching, and development of all employees is supported
  • Conduct project-level audits and verify applicable personnel are meeting inspection requirements outlined in the leading indicator requirement
  • Assisting in the development of the risk assessment that will be completed during the development of the PSSP
  • Functions as a liaison with governmental inspectors, agencies, and regulators in the event of inspections to correct deficiencies and to minimize citations and fines for non-compliance
  • Continually monitoring, trending, and analyzing safety performance; recommending and assisting in implementing mitigative measures for the Work as required
  • Leading and/or participating and assisting in incident investigations and ensuring the resulting reports are provided to the client in alignment with the clients and contractors Incident Classification Guide
  • Support Senior Project Leaders and Field Supervisors to effectively apply the Safety Management System
  • Ensuring the project Emergency Response Plan has appropriate First Aid equipment/qualified/assigned First Aid coverage for work crews and prepare site management and personnel through mock emergency evacuation exercises and/or tabletop exercises.
  • Communicating of safety expectations to other contractors, subcontractors and workers on the worksite.

Your Experience

  • Must be a registered CRSP with 10+ years’ experience on major projects related to pipeline projects, heavy civil and undergrounds or tunnel boring.
  • Very familiar with the type of work activities that are associated with heavy construction projects such as tunneling or pipeline.
  • Must have experience working as a prime contractor.
  • Effectively sets goals and business objectives, and has successfully leads teams to achieve them.
  • Strong proficiency in MS Office
  • Ability to manage high times of stress and tight deadlines
  • Strong organization, time management, and communication skills
  • Flexible with working on multi-year projects with varying work schedules
