PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THE JOB (SUMMARY)

To safely manage, handle, and dispose of hazardous materials in compliance with environmental and safety regulations at the Waste Management Plant. This includes spill response, material identification, and the implementation of waste segregation protocols.

QUALIFICATIONS AND RELEVANT EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • Grade 12 Certificate
  • Valid Drivers Licence (Heavy-duty (CE or C1) licence is an advantage)
  • Certificate in Hazardous Materials Handling or related field
  • First Aid and Firefighting Certification
  • At least 3-5 years of experience in waste management, industrial safety, or hazardous materials handling
  • Knowledge of environmental regulations and standards
  • Experience with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and decontamination procedures

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF JOB TASKS

Hazardous Material Handling

  • Safely manage the receipt, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Perform inspections of hazardous materials for proper labelling and containment.
  • Operate and maintain hazardous waste equipment such as pumps and containment units.

Waste Management and Segregation

  • Implement protocols for waste segregation in line with environmental regulations.
  • Ensure proper labelling and classification of waste streams.
  • Oversee the safe transportation of hazardous waste within the facility.

Environmental Compliance

  • Conduct routine checks to ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental policies.
  • Assist in audits and reporting for regulatory bodies.
  • Stay updated with industry standards and apply them to daily operations.

Equipment Maintenance

  • Perform routine checks and maintenance on spill kits, protective gear, and containment units.
  • Ensure decontamination stations are functioning effectively.

Spill Response and Incident Reporting

  • Act as a first responder to hazardous material spills.
  • Develop and execute containment and cleanup plans.
  • Record incidents and propose preventive measures.
