Role purpose:

Reporting to the Portfolio Manager, the Portfolio Risk Manager will provide strategic risk management services and advice for the company in Mongolia (Country office and Mongolian Project Development Office, MPDO). With the Portfolio Manager the role will develop a comprehensive risk management approach for the company in Mongolia complementary to the country strategy and with direct links to the work of the team.

The role will own and be accountability for the maturity and health of the risk management system within company in Mongolia while ownership of individual and collective risks remains with team members. You will be part of a small high performing team and work closely with other functions including Rio Tinto Projects, Group Risk, Copper Growth & Development, Procurement, Studies, Technical, Finance and Legal.

Responsibilities: 

  • Alignment to the Country Strategy
  • Integration into business planning processes and routines
  • Representation of external and internal risks
  • Direct linkage to the priorities of the team
  • Direct link to the work of the team (Risk drives the work, the work doesn't drive the risk)
  • Facilitate the Country office and MPDO risk registers and provide direct support to the Country and MPDO Directors and senior stakeholders in the identification, assessment documentation and communication of risks (threats/opportunities)
  • With risk owners, facilitate the development of comprehensive risk response and management plans for both threats and opportunities.
  • Risk response and management plans are embedded into the way work is planned, initiated, executed and closed.
  • Risks are actively monitored and updated
  • Actively monitor work, team, local and regional trends and support senior team members in the interpretation of these to draw conclusions as to how they may influence the risk profile or individual risks
  • Assess and monitor the level of capability in risk management across the team. Where gaps to the required standard are identified develop programs to upskill the team using formal learning and/or coaching
  • Develop communication tools to clearly and simply communicate risk profile, health and changes in a visual manner

Requirements:

  • Bachelor degree or diploma from academic college or universities in an applicable field (Project Management, Risk Management, finance, business, engineering etc)
  • Higher tertiary qualification such as an MBA will be beneficial
  • Minimum 10 years experience cumulative experience with direct experience in Risk Management
  • Experience working with Risk and/or project management tools
  • Exceptional spoken and written Mongolian and English
  • Strong knowledge of risk management principles, tools and methodologies
  • Experience in coaching for performance
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to build strong relationships and influence key stakeholders to achieve desired outcomes
  • Licenses/Certifications-Not required
