Position Overview:
We are seeking a skilled and experienced Mixed Production Farmer to oversee and manage our orchard operations. The role will focus on the year-round cultivation, harvesting, and maintenance of avocado, macadamia, and lime trees. This includes managing irrigation systems, machinery, pest control, fertilization, and labour supervision. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in horticulture, tree crop production, and a hands-on approach to day-to-day farming.
Key Responsibilities:
- Plan and implement all stages of crop production, including planting, pruning, fertilizing, irrigation, and harvesting of avocados, macadamias, and limes.
- Operate and maintain farm machinery and equipment, including tractors, sprayers, and harvesting machinery.
- Monitor tree health and productivity, identify pest and disease issues, and apply integrated pest and disease management strategies.
- Develop and manage irrigation schedules using efficient water management techniques tailored to orchard needs.
- Ensure optimal soil health through regular testing, fertilization programs, and organic matter management.
- Supervise and train farm workers, including seasonal labour during harvest periods.
- Maintain compliance with Work Health and Safety and biosecurity requirements.
- Maintain records related to inputs, crop performance, harvest volumes, and operational costs.
- Coordinate produce storage, packing, and logistics to market or export specifications.
- Liaise with agronomists, suppliers, and contractors as required.
Skills & Experience:
Proven experience in farming.
Practical knowledge of irrigation systems, orchard machinery, and crop nutrition.
Strong leadership and communication skills; experience managing small teams.
Excellent problem-solving ability and capacity to adapt to seasonal and environmental challenges.
Understanding of market requirements and quality standards for horticultural produce.
Preferred Qualifications:
Qualification in Horticulture, Agriculture, or related field (desirable but not essential).
Minimum 5 years of experience in tree crop or mixed farming operations.
Current driver's license and machinery operation tickets (highly regarded).
