About the job Financial Accountant (GL & Payments)

Responsible for ensuring smooth financial operations by managing cash flow and processing payments to vendors and suppliers. Tracks expenditures and reconciles processed transactions by verifying entries and comparing system reports against account balances.

Key Responsibilities

General Ledger (GL)

  • Prepare and post month-end journal entries (e.g., accruals, prepayments, provisions, and allocations) with appropriate supporting documentation and approvals.
  • Perform timely balance sheet reconciliations (including bank, intercompany, payroll clearing, fixed assets, and GST/withholding accounts), investigate variances, and resolve outstanding items.
  • Maintain the integrity of the general ledger by reviewing the chart of accounts, cost centres, and project codes, ensuring consistent and accurate financial coding across transactions.
  • Support the month-end and year-end close processes by preparing key account schedules and ensuring proper cut-off and compliance with accounting policies.
  • Liaise with internal and external auditors by preparing audit schedules, providing supporting documentation, and implementing agreed control enhancements.

Financial and Statutory Reporting

  • Prepare month-end and quarter-end financial statements and management reports, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and timely submission.
  • Perform analytical reviews of financial results (P&L and balance sheet), investigate significant variances, and provide clear commentary to stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable reporting standards and organisational accounting policies (e.g., accrual accounting, revenue and expense recognition, and disclosure requirements).
  • Coordinate reporting timelines and requirements with auditors and internal stakeholders, including the preparation of audit packs, lead schedules, and supporting disclosures.

Payment Analysis and Control

  • Maintain reporting templates and enhance reporting processes through standardization and automation (e.g., Excel models), strengthening controls and reducing close timelines.
  • Manage vendor master data, including creating and updating vendor records, bank details, and tax information, with appropriate verification and segregation-of-duties controls.
  • Address vendor queries (invoice status, payment advice, discrepancies) and resolve issues by liaising with internal stakeholders such as Procurement, Operations, and Budget Owners.
  • Process employee claims and staff reimbursements in accordance with company policy, ensuring completeness of supporting documentation and proper approvals.
  • Support payment runs and controls by preparing payment proposals, performing bank/payment file checks, and ensuring timely and accurate remittances while preventing duplicate or fraudulent payments.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Degree or Diploma in Finance, Economics, Business Studies, or a related discipline.
  • Candidates currently enrolled in CPA Australia will also be considered.
  • Solid understanding of basic bookkeeping and accounting principles.
  • Proven ability to calculate, post, and manage accounting figures and financial records.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organisational skills; able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Able to work under time constraints and meet deadlines.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
