About the job Family Law Attorney
High standards. Real investment. A firm that actually takes care of its people.
Who we are
At Slovensky Law, we help people reclaim control of their lives during a family crisis — and we take that seriously. Our mission is to provide clear, honest, strategic guidance that empowers clients to make informed decisions, even when those decisions are hard. We celebrate attorneys who find creative, unconventional solutions to family law problems. If you see a case file as an opportunity to build someone a better future, you'll fit right in.
We're a collaborative, high-performing firm with a culture we've worked hard to build. Our office has a garden in it. That's not an accident — it reflects how we think about the environment we work in. We believe people do their best work when they're supported, energized, and not buried in administrative tasks they shouldn't be handling.
We absolutely refuse to tolerate high-maintenance, humorless, self-entitled, or self-important individuals — no matter how talented they are.
The role
You'll take full ownership of family law cases from inception through disposition. That means discovery, pleadings, motions, depositions, mediation, hearings, and trial. You'll also have a paralegal supporting you, so you can stay focused on doing legal work — not scanning documents. (That said: if the printer jams and you're standing right next to it, we expect you to at least try to fix it before asking for help.)
Day to day, you will:
Manage your own caseload with full ownership from intake to resolution
Conduct client counseling, set realistic expectations on risk, cost, and timeline
Draft and finalize pleadings, discovery, settlement agreements, and pretrial briefs
Delegate effectively to paralegals and review their work for quality
Maintain organized e-files using firm templates and checklists
Show up to court on time, prepared, and projecting the competence our clients deserve
What we're looking for
Skills matter, but so does who you are. We need someone who:
Has a JD and an active Virginia State Bar license in good standing
Brings proven family law experience and can hit the ground running after onboarding
Thinks creatively and celebrates finding solutions others wouldn't think to try
Can tell a client — with compassion and directness — that spending $500 to fight over a $50 lamp isn't the right call
Reads financial statements, understands equitable distribution, and can build a solid time-sharing plan
Knows that being a great lawyer sometimes means wearing multiple hats — and doesn't resent it
How we measure success
Billable hours: 1,200 / yr
Time tracked daily: 99%
Correspondence replied: 90% in 1 day
Status updates: 95% on time
